After 3 straight starts with a save percentage under 900, sure feels like the Sharks rushed Jones back. Put Dell back in for a few games. He was on fire.

  2. Will from Iowa says:

Been listening to you guys for around 10 years now i think. The San Jose Sharks will never win the championship with Doug Wilson at the helm. They are still thinking they can win with the same core guys. They can’t compete with the top of the league especially the eastern conf like Pittsburgh Tampa Bay. Let the young guys play more I like Paul Martin but his time is coming to an end. The team will not win anything with the same core guys they have had for the past 5-8 years.

  3. Matty says:

We’re still listening dudes. Love the podcast. Keep recording more often! Thank you!

  4. Susan says:

Love the podcast! Keep up the good work, boys!

And now, can someone explain to me WHY the Empty Net strategy is used when it NEVER works?! It seems like “hey, we seem to be losing here, so let’s boost our opponent’s score even more by gifting them with an empty netter.”

    What the heck?!

    • Kent Bunn says:

Teams occasionally do score with the goalie pulled.

If you’re going to lose the game as it currently stands, it only makes sense to pull the goalie, and try to get something.

  5. Kent Bunn says:

Yeah, nobody ever wins it all after adding one top tier player.

Phil Kessel is just a bum, after all.

  6. Taylor says:

I’m old school and one of my favorite hockey rules is: always play a hot goalie. I don’t care if the competition has been light, or if he played last night (a blowout) – Dell has stopped 86 of 88 shots in his last 3 starts for a .977 save %. Plus, Jones does not look comfortable, maybe still hurt. Dell should start v. the Wild.

    • Kent Bunn says:

The one exception to the rule about starting the “hot goalie” is on back to backs tho. That’s been the case forever.

  7. James says:

Martin returns for 1 game, Burns scores. Just sayin’ …

  8. Ruben says:

Looks like the Sharks just placed Ryan Carpenter on waivers. A complete whiff on the FO’s internal evaluation of him and/or a terrible case of asset management during the expansion draft when the team could have really used a good forward and apparently had an extra protect slot available. I wonder how Jonathan Marchessault or James Neal would look in teal right now.

    • James says:

It’s bizarre that early in his career, DW did so well putting together a great group of forwards – drafted Couture, recognized Pavelski’s talent, added Thornton, kept resigning Marleau, etc. – but he couldn’t get a good D together. Now it’s the opposite. He’s put together the Sharks best D ever, but he keeps investing in busts at forward: Goldobin (1st round pick), Boedker, (big contract), Carpenter, (protected in the expansion draft vs. adding Neal or Marchessault) and we may soon be adding Meier to that list. Hopefully Donskoi stays hot when he recovers and DW makes some moves. Mike is right – 1 player won’t be enough, the Sharks need at least a couple of new scorers. And for the record, I don’t think we want Kane in our locker room.

  9. Matty says:

“I don’t see me trading key young core players …” – Doug Wilson

Among forwards, who exactly is this “young core” that is untouchable? Ok, hang on to Donskoi, Tierney (who was rumored to be on the block before he started scoring), Hertl, and Meier. But what about Goodrow, Labanc, O’Regan, Sorenson? You’re telling me those 4 guys are untouchable? Even though they’ve been healthy scratched repeatedly? This kind of overvaluing is how we end up protecting a Ryan Carpenter and then giving him away. If the Sharks had picked up James Neal, we’d be atop the Pacific Division. I agree with Doug – we’re a solid scorer away from being a dangerous team because the west is incredibly weak this year and our D is among the best in the league.

  10. Teddy says:

Jones has been our MVP most of the year, but nevertheless it’s a bad move PDB didn’t start Dell v Edmonton. Dell’s last 4 starts: 4-0, 1.00 GAA. What more can the guy do? As my hockey coach used to say: I always start the team that gives us the best chance to win. Period. Right now, that’s Dell. Maybe not long term, but right now.

  11. Nazir says:

Mike an Doug – should the Sharks sign James Neal in the off-season?

  12. Matty says:

    December Goalie Stats

    Jones
    Record: 2-6
    Save %: .884
    GAA: 4.28

    Dell
    Record 4-0
    Save % .949
    GAA: 1.75

    • James says:

Numbers don’t lie, and I maybe would have thrown Dell a start or 2 more, but otherwise PDB played this difficult month for Jones well. Jones brought this team to a Cup final. He’s signed for 6 years. He’s a special player. Back in good form and he’s played exceptionally well the last 2 games. He’s your starter. Dell may be trade bait and could bring the Sharks a good player, even if only a rental.
