DOH 159 – Guite, McCarthy, Pelech, and a Slow July
July 15th, 2011, 4:28 pm
Mike and Doug feast on the small scraps of news that happens this time of year, the signings of Ben Guite, John McCarthy, and Matt Pelech. They also talk about the different game plans that other successful teams have used to make a run for the Cup, and how the Sharks have been different. Finally, the Dudes try to come up with somebody, anybody, that the Sharks might be interested in and (most importantly) is available.

I feel bad for you guys, there’s pretty much nothing to talk about. How you talk for 40+ minutes about the Sharks in mid-July is beyond me. Keep it up.
and why I listen for 40 minutes every week even though it is july is beyond me. love the podcast though.
Haha Yeah I know there really isn’t anything I want to hear an opinion on but I listen anyways
I think most Sharks fans would cry ‘foul’ if either Demers or Braun were dealt. Even if it meant getting Callahan/Boyle/Dubinsky . . . whom I’m not overly-impressed by, and AREN’T Blue Liners.
It was surprising not to hear Edmonton mentioned, when the ‘ebb & flow’ of teams was being discussed. The Oilers are LOADED w/ young talent. Provided they can secure a top-notch netminder in the next couple years, The Oilers will be returning to the list of the elite.
Eh i’d definitely trade Demers for Dubinsky, maybe even Callahan.
It would be a huge improvement for our team this year and considering the potential both Demers and Dubinsky have, I don’t see it as being a big risk even a few years down the road.
Since the 2008-09 season, roduction from The Sharks’ blue-line has dropped by more than 50 pts.
Even w/ the acquisition of Burns, now is NOT the time to trade away a blossoming d-man w/ offensive talents. Be they Demers — OR Braun . . .
PROduction*
The question is, how much better do you think Demers is than Braun? Because right now Braun is probably a 7th defenseman, and if we traded Demers then Braun would take his spot on our 3rd pairing.
Is Demers that much better than Braun that he wouldn’t be worth trading for Dubinsky. Dubinsky is a great player who might end up being a Pavelski or Kesler type player.
I dunno, i think we’d be crazy not to accept that trade if it was offered to us.
Better potential/high end? In my opinion Demers wins, but only time will tell.
Better right now? Demers is much better right now. More grit, way less “oops” lapses etc. If we are mortgaging future for big bang right now (as some “dudes” would lead us to believe (rightly I would say)) it makes no sense to downgrade “slightly” from Demers to Braun and just hope Braun develops enough over the year to hold his own in the playoffs.
Many people pointed to the loss of Demers in the playoffs last year as one of, or THE reason(s) why the Sharks got blown out like they did by the Canuks. Whether that’s a true assessment, who’s to say, but that’s a lot of recognition of the job Demers was doing on the ice. Could Braun have done better in his absence than Huskins? We’ll never know. McLellan sure didn’t think so.
Will Braun be where Demers is nowish after the off season and next season? I don’t know, you willing to take that risk?
As to the merits of the trade:
A. I highly doubt any of those guys are on the table unless there’s a arbitration salary issue AND some kind of cluster-fuck personality clash as well.
B. As much as I just wrote a lot of words, I really have no idea the fair market value of those guys per say. The Sharks have a gaping need and I would like a guy like Dubinsky rather than an Eager side/down-grade to fill it. I would trade Braun+ for any of them in a heartbeat. I personally wouldn’t trade Demers right now without additional insider-trading information about Braun’s development.
C. I personally think they need to lock-down Burns right now before the season starts. Why? For all the monetary reasons of course but also because what if he doesn’t re-sign and we make the above trade? Next season the Sharks are Burns-less and Demers-less and our D core is a wasteland and we’re at best getting gouged for an Ehrhoff/Beiska (if we’re lucky) and at worst trading more pieces for another Burns potentially.
Regardless of what we’d do, I seriously doubt DW is dealing Demers any time soon. Unless of course it’s for a ridiculous return.
If we had resigned White I’d agree that either Demers or Braun are expendable in the future. But with the Dan Boyle retirement on the horizon they aren’t.
DW even stated that he thought White wasn’t needed with Demers and Braun in the lineup. I don’t agree with that sentiment – but either way the fact is still that DW has long term plans for Demers and Braun.
We currently have 4 right handed offensive defensemen, and we could’ve had 5 if we resigned Ian White. So I don’t think Demers is necessarily off limits, but i don’t think that his trade value is really high enough that’d he’d be worth trading anyways.
Demers is certainly the better of the two. I don’t think there’s any question about that. But is he so much better than Braun that he wouldn’t be worth trading for a great young player like Brandon Dubinsky? No way.
Demers is playing on our THIRD pairing this year, and third pairing duty is something Justin Braun should easily be able to handle, especially by the end of this years regular season. So if we traded Demers we wouldn’t really be losing much THIS YEAR.
So to reiterate, adding Dubinsky would be a far greater benefit to our team than swapping Demers with Braun would be a detriment. So it would greatly improve our chances at winning a Stanley Cup this year, which is what it’s all about.
Having said all that, I doubt NY would trade Dubinsky for anyone let alone Demers since they’ve been pretty desperate for Centers; but we’d be crazy not to say yes to that deal if it ever happened.
If you think the Rangers will trade for another dman, i want some of what you’re smoking.
Looks like Andrew Murray to SJ is bs.

THN interview with him refers to him as a free-agent… Nothing about recently signing a deal with the Sharks.
Oh well.
Guess not… LOL.
Andrew Murray to SJ confirmed by David Pollack.
Maybe something for you guys to comment on in the next podcast:

Antii Niemi was called the worst player of the playoffs last year, and Doug Murray wasn’t given a very good report either.
On a good note for you guys, Dan Boyle was considered to be the best playoff performer last year for the Sharks.
Ruben is there a way you can cut and paste that report for us here? I’d love to read it!
They were just paragraph snippets. Here are all the Sharks they talked about:
Value Up
Logan Couture, San Jose Sharks: 2.6 GVT
Couture established himself as a quality scorer during the regular season, but 2011 was his first time being a target of shutdown forwards. He stepped up with 14 points in 18 games.
Ryane Clowe, San Jose Sharks: 3.3 GVT
Clowe played 19:27 per game, scoring 15 points in 17 games making 2011 his best career playoffs.
Dan Boyle, San Jose Sharks: 3.2 GVT
Despite not performing above average defensively (-0.8 DGVT), Boyle did his job, scoring eight of his 16 playoff points on the power play.
Value Down
Antti Niemi, San Jose Sharks: -8.7 GVT
Niemi may have won the Stanley Cup in 2010, but he was the worst player of the 2011 playoffs. He allowed more than three goals in each game of the Western Conference Finals.
Ben Eager, San Jose Sharks: -1.7 GVT
As if his boneheaded penalties weren’t enough, Eager only scored one goal and finished with a negative defensive GVT.
Dany Heatley, San Jose Sharks: -0.2 GVT
Nine points in 18 games and minus-2 from a point-per-game career player who scored 64 points in 80 regular season games. No surprise he was traded in the offseason.
Douglas Murray, San Jose Sharks: -2.6 GVT
With just one point and minus-7 in 18 games, Murray was one of the worst players of the entire playoffs. For a defenseman playing 19 minutes per game, the Sharks needed much more.
_______________________
Niemi was about DOUBLE worse than any other player on the list per GVT (Gregory Campbell was a -4.4 GVT). Doug Murray was one of only 4 people to have a GVT below -2 (Niemi, Murray, Campbell, Pekka Rinne).
As the dudes will surely agree, Puck Prospectus is a great site, well worth the price of admission.
I pay for it myself, and encourage others to do the same.
Thanks Ruben. I’ll have to check out subscribing to them.
I think with Neemo, when he was bad – he was terrible. But he was very good vs Detroit. I’m not sure if I can fault him for the Vancouver series. I do think he cost us a game vs LA for sure.
It’s a great question I can’t wait to hear what Mike thinks.
With all the blown 3rd period leads that either gave us a heart attack or broke our hearts its easy to dump on Nemo although he was hung out to dry a lot. I personally thought he was alright although I do feel that the hawks won in spite of him and not because of him.
