Hockey in Vegas is a terrible idea. Hockey is a niche sport, where fans develop a cult-like following. Not going to happen in Vegas. Also, bad for the players. Not a good place to live, raise a family, etc. As you pointed out, home games will have lots of out-of-towners. Discussion topics: line combos, what happens if Jones is not an NHL caliber starter, if the Sharks miss the playoffs is DW fired?

    • Rosevelt says:

Great question. SJ missing the playoffs and Wilson being fired are real possibilities. My concern is that understanding this, Wilson may trade away assets at the deadline in order to push a bubble team roster into the playoffs. He could sacrifice more of the club’s future to save his job. I’m in favor of a roster / front office blow-up. Would like to see Joe, Patty, and Wilson out the door. I would even deal Pavs as his value is still very high. Give yourself a 3-year plan to get back into the playoffs with a new young core and a 5-year plan to be a contender. P.S. The inability to hire a coaching staff is making DeBoer look like an amateur. My $0.02.

  2. Paul says:

Did any one of you make it to the prospect game? Could talk about your thoughts on the youngsters if you made it.. Tierny was making everyone look foolish during the new 3 on 3 ot.

  3. Ian says:

Glad to see you guys soldier on during the dog days of summer. Lots of laughs this week, much needed.

  4. Ian says:

The problem with expansion into non-conventional markets is that there is usually no immediate payoff but if you can get kids in those seats and put sticks in their hands and the team lasts long enough that a good number of those kids grow up to become ticket buyers you can build a market. So while putting a team in Quebec has a built in fan base your not really making any new fans of the game. A team in Vegas has the potential to make actual new fans and if the NHL is to continue to grow they can only do so by making new fans. Vegas might be a bad idea but Auston Matthews is likely your first overall draft pick in 2016, hes from Scottsdale Az. Does he pick up a hockey stick instead of a football with out the Coyotes?

  5. Ted says:

I love this podcast. Even when you guys having nothing to talk about, it’s still highly entertaining. Keep ’em coming! Please! Actually, I think the entire Sharks organization needs another Dudes “exorcism” episode, a la Craig Anderson.

I’m writing to respond to what Max wrote: ” if the Sharks miss the playoffs is DW fired?” This is a legit question and one of the most interesting storylines of the upcoming season. By giving up on the rebuild, is this playoffs-or-bust for Wilson? Personally, I doubt it. As the Dudes have mentioned, Platner doesn’t seem like an insider who has any candidates waiting in the wings. But it certainly adds even more drama to an already intriguing season.

    • James says:

Going into this off-season, I would have said the Sharks could miss the playoff cut and Wilson would be fine. But after replacing the coach and locking up 2 guys in their mid-thirties plus an unproven goaltender for a combined 10 years / $38 mil, then yes, you have to fire the GM if they don’t win some postseason games. It’s playoffs-or-bust for him, absolutely, even if there are no obvious candidates for the job. I think this season is a win-win for the Sharks. If they come together and make the postseason, great, we’ll all be cheering for them to prove that they can win in the playoffs. If they miss out, Wilson will be gone and it will usher in a new era.

I’m with Ted. Just record. We’ll listen and some of us will comment. To those people who ask you to record more: COMMENT ON THE BLOG. This is a two-way street. As for the podcast., talk about whatever… Doug’s mustache, Vegas stories, Devin Setogucci’s wedding, whatever. Here’s a topic: take the 49ers horrendous offseason and pretend it’s the Sharks. What happens? New coach? Check. Who’s your (potential) Aldon Smith? Go.

As for the informal poll: hockey in Vegas is a bad idea. I’ve gone for the Frozen Fury game a handful of times. Went to the game the first time. The last couple of times, we sold our tickets on game day. I can go to hockey in SJ anytime. When I’m in Vegas, I’m there to… um…. do other things. I’d rather go to go a game in AZ than in Vegas.

Lastly… Snapchat? Are we 12? No. Just…. no.

  6. Not Yours says:

I’ve listened for nearly two years now and love your show! I started listening while living in Hawaii. I’m now in San Diego but I grew up in the bay area and have always loved the sharks.

You guys are so entertaining to listen to and I look forward to more each and every week.

As “WingsFanInSharkLand” said it’s totally a 2 way street and the 3 week silence was just awful to get through (lol).

I usually don’t go to the site for anything but the weekly dl but this time I started reading the blog and now I plan on trying to contribute something monthly if not more.

For now I’ll shout a Huuuuge thank you to you both and want to let you know that there are at least a few on the islands that follow you as well.

    Thx again!

  7. Tom says:

I lived in Vegas for a couple years. Now it’s been a while since I’ve been back, but as a former local, I think there will be more response from locals than most of you think.

The most common complaint I heard from other locals, and I am not including college students in Vegas, was the lack of sports entertainment. What most tourist and visitors don’t realize is that Las vegas is mostly suburb. The majority of people that live there aren’t living some bizzare 24 hr a day party life. In fact most people that live in Vegas AVOID the strip unless they work there or are bringing others there. Think Alcatraz and Pier 39…

Yes, corporate sponsors would be huge and they will have a constant stream of people making trips to see their favorite team on the road. But, there are a lot of families there and there is no other sports in town.

The thing about other warm non-traditional markets is they usually have an MLB team and even a NBA or NFL team too.

I understand that many people work swing and graveyard shifts when games are happening, but not enough that I think it would be a major issue.

Long story short, I think Las Vegas is actually pretty hungry for a sports team. If the NHL got in their first that is the way to go. If any of the other major sports were getting in there first, it might not work. But if they are the first game in town, I think you’ll be surprised how many people become hockey crazy.

  8. Ruben says:

Really entertaining podcast, guys. Not sure why Kevin Kurz is so easy to pick on, I do it too and I actually think he isn’t half bad, but he just doesn’t seem to be able to get people to warm up to him!

I agree with Tom. Las Vegas is not a small town and, from what I understand from friends/relatives that have and still live there, there is a desire for something to claim as their own other than the strip. Also, most locals, like Tom mentioned, rarely go to the strip or gamble. Despite having more money, I would bet most athletes would quickly tire of that scene. Probably not much different than living in NY or LA for people who live that lifestyle.

There is also an unusually strong hockey following there. There are numerous ice hockey tournaments that take place there throughout the year with strong local participation. It isn’t Sharks Ice, but there is a presence. It’s not like it is Fresno, CA (*sniff*) or Albuquerque, NM…

Maybe organized crime/gambling will be a problem? Perhaps strong road team support? But man, will the home team have an advantage not caring about partying while every read team comes in trying to fit in a night on the town in their 4 game in 6 night trip through LV, SJ, LA and ANA!

  9. James says:

Interesting response in Kurz’s chat to a question regarding the 2014 off-season. “My opinion is that the preference would have been to make a major trade involving Thornton, and to a lesser extent, Marleau, last offseason. When they bungled that plan, it had to change.”

  10. evilducks says:

So, what goal song did each of you vote for?

  11. Ted says:

A month and half after the free agent madness, it seems like only fans see the Sharks as contenders. Most power rankings I’ve read have the Sharks as a non-playoff time. Vegas odds have actually worsened for the Sharks winning the Cup, settling around 50/1 vs 40/1 before free agency. Dudes, are we all delusional, or do others just underestimate the impact of a new coach, top-4 Dman, and one the best 3rd liners in the game?
