DOH 322 – Rebound In a Weak Pacific
December 27th, 2015, 7:42 pm
The Sharks now have the best road record in the NHL, which is just good enough to put them in playoff position in the worst division in hockey. Can they win at home against bad teams?

Hi Doug,
You mentioned learning to skate is one of your New Years resolutions. A couple of weeks ago I decided that my 10 year old son skating circles around me was completely unacceptable. So I signed up for learn to skate classes at Sharks Ice in San Jose. First class is this Tues. should be hilarious.
Anyway I was thinking, Mike if you drop your skating knowledge on Doug please video or periscope the session.
Thanks and love the podcast!
What’s the worst part of this season?
– Sharks are 2nd to last in the weakest NHL division
– Sharks’ goaltenders’ save % is .899
– Burns, needing a bounce back year on D, is -15
– Sharks have no first round pick in this year’s draft

1. This in unacceptable IMO.
2. Also ballz.
3. I actually think Burns is having a career year. I don’t put alot into +/-.
4. Sharks have no 1st round picks…. as of yet…! I’m going to be pretty mad if DW doesn’t procure one by draft day.
I vote 1
I vote #4. I don’t think there are many players on the roster Wilson could deal get a first for. Only Pavelski, Vlasic, Couture, Burns. But I don’t see him dealing any of those players.
FYI, I just emailed this to the dudes for the next podcast… I’d love anyone else’s opinions or thoughts…
Dudes,
I have a topic of discussion for the next podcast…
As of writing this email the Sharks are 27th in the overall league standings. We would be slotted to pick 4th overall in the 2016 draft, and have a fairly decent shot at winning the lottery….. !!
OH WAIT – WE TRADED AWAY OUR 1ST ROUND PICK…
I’ve made this point several times on the comments on the blog, I think Doug Wilson is essentially running this franchise by himself. Jeff Marek has said repeatedly of the MvsW podcast that he has been told as much. That Hasso Plattner basically is “leaning heavily” on Doug Wilson to understand how to be a NHL owner.
So here’s the question… Is there ANY accountability for Doug Wilson at this point? I’ve defended this guy ad nauseam… but if we miss a top 5 pick or a generational talent like Auston Matthews I might seriously lose my S***!!
Even if we trade a rostered player for another first, I cannot understand how Doug Wilson will let this team spiral into the abyss of the standings and DO NOTHING to improve it? I don’t understand the direction? If DW thought he was pretty sure that this team wasn’t going to be a lottery pick team at the end of the season – then why hasn’t he addressed the fact that we’re currently 27th!!
I’m so confused..
I think that trading the first round pick after the first year the sharks missed the playoffs in a long time is a stupid move. What should have been done a long time ago is to trade EVERYTHING that is on its highest value or on the decline for picks/young players asap. Sit at last spot for 3-4 seasons and gain high picks. Trade for high picks as often as possible.
When all the new players are in the system, start trading for cheap old veterans with stanley cup rings that can rub off on the young players (Jagr kind of players), so that the new young players can learn from the veterans.
After that start trying to build a team again around the new core of first round picks..
Aim for the cup before they get old.
I agree 100%. But the teams who have done this and succeeded – Blackhawks, Panthers, Islanders – drafted well and properly developed players. I don’t think the Sharks have done either.
I think Wilson should have been fired 3 years ago. For now, the real question is: If the Sharks are still on the playoff bubble near the trade deadline, would DW give up a good current roster player (or package of players/prospects) for a 2016 first round pick? That would presumably hurt the team short term but help long term. Imagine if the team misses the playoffs, has no first rounder in the draft, and watches the Bruins pick in the top 10. Then Wilson HAS to be fired. If not, it will be very clear he has zero accountability.
I think People need to calm down. once we get healthy we will be a decent team. The best team, maybe not. but i thank a playoff team. I can agree a little with the future … with no picks it looks quite weak. but that can change when things get closer to the draft.
Yeah, I certainly don’t like the “inconsistency” of the team, but the team was missing arguably their 3rd best player for the entire 1st half. They also couldn’t figure out what to do with their #6 Dman and was also missing various bottom 6 players. Other bottom 6 guys were either being misused (Tierney) or in the middle of absurd runs of bad luck (Hertl).
I don’t think this is magically a SC contender with Couture back, but barring another significant injury I am not really concerned about missing the playoffs (and, thus, not particularly concerned about that lost 1st rd pick, mid-late 1st rd picks are pretty overrated and certainly worth an above average goalie on a great contract such as Jones). If Donskoi, Nieto, DeMelo, and Tierney continue to develop through the 2nd half, then maybe this is a dangerous team that can break my heart once again.
