The Sharks have won three in a row, and have a stretch of very winnable games against bottom-tier opponents coming up. Will they be a playoff team soon?

I’m with Mike 100%. I will be more grouchy: how could the Dudes not mention the main reason the Sharks are suddenly in contention is because the Blue have fallen off a cliff and lost 6 in a row! If St. Louis had even gone .500 in that span, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

Martin Jones’ play is so weird. He’ reminds me of my parents TV. They have an old TV that usually has some weird red lines through it. Just when they’re about to replace it, suddenly, the lines go away for a few months. But rest assured, eventually, they always come back, like the soft goal he gave up to the Kings today. I keep telling them to just replace it.

Do not like the Dubnyk trade. Very little return for an important player. While his numbers are poor was competition for Jones. Now we’re back to the days when the coach does not have an NHL level backup to play. With the Sharks’ tough schedule coming up will Boughner really want to start one of those completely inexperienced goalies against Colorado or Vegas?

    • James says:

It’s a puzzling move, to say the least. Ko?ená?’s .898 save % does not seem to warrant promotion. And as the Dudes have pointed out, Jones is at his worst without a viable competitor. Fitting this narrative, he didn’t finish his first game with Ko?ená? as backup. Is Wilson throwing in the towel on the season? Will the Sharks trade for a goaltending prospect? Or is Wilson just unable to read Jones and give him what he seems to need to succeed?

      • Matty says:

I read it more as DW not really thinking the team will make the playoffs due to their tough schedule, so why not get a 5th rounder plus do the veteran a solid by trading him to a contender. Plus, we get to audition the goalies in the pipeline. Assuming the Sharks buy out Jones this summer, they can learn if they have a backup so they’re only in the market for 1 goalie, not 2.

That said, I would have waited to see if SJ won today’s game. If they won they’d be only 1 point out. Hard to take away a key piece if you’re that close.

Now the drama becomes, do they deal Marleau to a contender? Or as the dudes said, is it more important to the team that he break the record in teal.

        • James says:

Agree it would have been smart to start Dubnyk today and see what happens, then make the call afterwards. Jones was noticeably fatigued and unfocused.

What makes you think DW will buy out Jones? He has been patient with this goalie to a fault. No reason to think he will bail on him now.

I know that calling for GM’s to get fired is usually over-reacting. And that Wilson has been overall incredibly successful in San Jose. But IMHO it’s time to move on. Looking for a GM that can roll out an NHL starting goalie, a decent backup, and a 3rd line center. Wilson is too close to these decisions. We need someone objective to shake this all up. This team was bad last year. They are bad this year. And without major changes they will be bad next year too.

    • matthew says:

At this point, if it’s someone not named Doug Wilson, it’ll still be someone with the last name Wilson, so not sure any relief is in sight on this score.

Any ETA on the next episode?

  5. Perniciousducks says:

Well, the Sharks turned back into the pumpkin we thought they were. I was entertained by them buying late round picks with cap space though.
