Yes but as the dudes have pointed out SJ’s options are limited with these long contracts. They can buy out Jones but who will they get to replace him? And do they also need to find a backup too?
Regardless of whether they make big changes in net, they will still be stuck with Karlsson, Vlasic, Meier, Labanc, all of whom have struggled mightily this season. Plus they will probably lose a decent player to Seattle. Maybe they surprise us and make a deal where they package a bad contract with a valuable player like Meier or Labanc.
Or maybe they just roll out the same core, with yet another different set of role players.
Dudes, thank you for keeping the entertainment flowing. Don’t despair. Right now, the worse it is the faster the team will come out of it. My heart was broken 4-5 years ago after Sharks managed to lose to Kings in the infamous series leading 3:0. They can’t hurt me after this no matter what they do.
They are definitely underperforming this year but by how much? 15 points? If Sharks can buy-out Jones + Vlasic and buy average goalie, hire an NHL coach things will improve in a hurry – we’ll be in the middle of the pack within 2-3 years. But we better suck good this and next 2 years to get the picks and shed over-the-hill players that don’t need or want to be here anymore ( I am looking at Couture, Mieier, EK65).
Dudes, I haven’t followed hockey since the pandemic. Just tuned in to your last few episodes. Great podcast. I can’t believe Martin Jones is *still* the Sharks goalie! And they traded an NHL quality backup!!! How is this possible?!? I was certain they would have fixed this by now. (sigh)
To take my mind of the poor Sharks play I have fantasized about a crazy, will never happen, but why not, strategy for key Sharks roster moves this off-season.
1. Buy out Martin Jones, send Korenar down, let Marleau retire
2. Convince Burns to add Seattle to his list of 3 teams, arrange a deal with Seattle picking him, SJ retains no salary
3. Select a blue chip goalie prospect in the draft
4. Sign two league average goalies to be a starting tandem next season
5. Use the cap space to fill out the roster, including targeting a 3rd line center
Since the trade of Dubnyk, Jones is 0-3, has been pulled from a game, and has an .810 save percentage.
I see a silver lining to the losing streak. Now the Sharks will have to make some big changes this summer.

IMHO the West should only get to send 3 teams to the playoffs. Arizona, St. Louis, SJ, these are not good teams.

Of course it doesn’t help Jones that his team is terrible.
