Two dudes blogging and podcasting about the San Jose Sharks, straight from sunny California.

post Our Take on the Start of Free Agency

We broke a lot of it down in the latest podcast (feed link here), especially the stuff with Campbell.  Not a real great day for the Sharks, but the free agency season ain’t over yet.  Oh yeah, we got the podcast listed on iTunes as well, so if you search for Dudes on Hockey or ‘sharks hockey’ you should be able to find it.  Spread the word, and keep those questions and comments coming.

Hey guys, I know it ain’t hockey, but how’s the area reacting with Baron Davis bolting for LA?

  2. Jerry says:

Love your work on the podcast, boys!

Why is San Jose not a desired destination for free agents? Three reasons. 1) We lack the tradition and aura of a number of teams, especially the Original Six. 2) Though we’re still a young franchise, other recent expansion teams have already accomplished more (ie Lightning’s won the Cup, Senators were in the Finals, etc). 3) San Jose’s management institutes a self-imposed salary cap on top of the NHL salary cap, so the organization isn’t willing to spend what’s necessary to win.

If we could make a trade for Dan Boyle, it’d only be great if his wrist is healthy.

By the way, screw Baron Davis. That selfish son of a bitch.

  3. Troy says:

That’s what I’m starting to hate with the new ownership here in Tampa. Boyle is a premier puck-moving defenseman, power play QB, such-and-such, and now it’s all about “bringing in Radim Vrbata, and Gary Roberts” and putting Boyle on the block. Same with Mike Smith, the young goalie from Dallas that we got in the Brad Richards deal. Olaf Kolzig? It’s 2008, not 1998. It unfortunately looks like the Bolts are going to be all offense/no defense next year. For the sake of being a fan, I hope it works out.

  4. Jerry says:

Great. Hossa signed with the Reg Wings. Hello, Doug Wilson? Is anybody paying attention at the Shark tank? Are you just planning to give Detroit the Cup next season? Or are you still sulking over the Brian Campbell debacle? Well, snap out of it. Just about every team is getting better in the West but the Sharks. The Wings signed Hossa, the Stars signed Avery, the Coyotes traded for Jokinen, so on and so forth. Given these latest signings by our competition, it’s time to totally revamp our marshmallow defense. We need to sign Brooks Orpik and Jason Smith. If we can’t trade for Dan Boyle, then let’s get Ron Hainsey. C’mon Wilson. I’ll tell you right now that simply hiring McLellan is not going to get this team to the next level. Let’s get a move on, damn it!

  5. Brian Boitano says:

OK, Orpik is out. Boyle is the last shot (unless there is a secret plan being hatched, but recent DW history has proven otherwise.) It’s going to be a rebuilding year, fellas. Our current roster can not compete with Detroit + Hossa. We’ll be scraping for the 8th seed against Phoenix. We’ll get Hips McGillicuddy from Carolina and enjoy the 25 games he’s healthy. His upside: his hot wife will be @ the Tank for most games.

Is Brad Norton our saviour this season?

I know, I know… the sky is falling.

  6. Troy – quick take on Baron. If this means the Warriors can add Brand and trade Harrington for Heinrich, then GSW are better for it. Davis is a headcase with two bad knees and a bad back. Have fun Clipper fans.

  7. Troy says:

Yeah, I think I heard Mullin’s ready to throw a 5 year max contract at Brand to bring him up to Oakland. And Hinrich’s expendable with D. Rose being in ChiTown now, that way Ellis can stay at the 2, where’s he been amazing thus far in his career. It could/would work out very well.

I just found it shocking Davis opted out on the last day after all indications made it appear like he was staying put for 08-09.
