Just realized yesterday that the sharks are now at the contract maximum. They will have to make room for Thornton and makes Marleau a lil more unlikely. Plus make Haley extremely unlikely but no surprise there.
Doug, you are right 99% of the time, but wrong to characterize the Sharks’ choice on Pavs in a binary way as simply EK65 or Pavs. That is just not true. By unloading Dell and Melker, the Sharks could have had Pavs for the same $7 mil rate he signed for. The Sharks CUT Pavs. They could have signed him but CHOSE not to. Feel free to argue whether they made the right call or not – he did get 3 years and I suspect that was the bigger issue – but please don’t misconstrue what actually happened. SJ had a choice and they made it.
For next year only, sure they could have added Pavs for $7 mil if they dealt Dell and Melker. But Pavs signed a 3-year deal and SJ could not afford him in 2020-21. No way SJ can carry Ek65’s $11.5 mil + Pavs’ $7 mil + Labanc’s eventual deal which could be anywhere from $4-6 mil.
James, I agree with you actually. DW simply chose not to give Pavs what he wanted and frankly deserved. But he wasn’t gonna get it from SJ. And probably rightfully so.
I don’t behoove Pavs for wanting money and term at this point in his career, he’s been underpaid. But SJ wasn’t gonna give it to him. And DW might be correct for not giving it to him.
I am worried though we’re gonna miss those deflection goals that are his forte.
The Stars also avoided giving Pavelski a no trade clause for the 3rd year of the contract. That means he can be exposed for the 2021 Seattle draft. Why on earth didn’t the Sharks give him such a contract? It could be as little as 2 years $14 million that way. Either expose him or deal him if you don’t want him for that 3rd year.
Tom, you are right we will definitely miss his goals – especially on a team with the best 2 offensive minded Dmen! Burns and Karlsson create chances and need someone to tip pucks and crush one timers. Sound like anyone?
I’m hoping the big young bodies like Tomas Hertl, Timo Meier, and Kevin Lebanc can fill that gap.
Plus we all know DW’s tag line – “this team isn’t assembled until after the trade deadline”.
Wonder if Jumbo is talking to other teams. He was close with Pavs. And he wants to win a cup.
I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility. However, Jumbo has gone on record saying that he’s a Shark and this is the only NHL team he’ll play for. That doesn’t mean sentiments change though.
One rumor I did hear from a reliable source… Jeff Marek on Sportsnet… He stated that he was told that Jumbo plans on playing a couple of years back in Switzerland where he played during the lockout and where his wife is from. Makes sense for many reasons, plus I think that league has a half schedule… like 40+ games?
After that I think it’s a sure thing he comes back in some capacity as a coach or in player development for SJ.
The Maple Leafs’ use of the LTIR to raise their cap is pretty slick. Nevertheless, hope the NHL ultimately closes that loophole.
