post How’d We Do?

Time for some reckoning. First round over, 2nd round begins tonight, so it’s time for a report card on our picks, and predictions for the next round.

The way I’m going to score this is one point for each game off. For instance, I picked Devils in 5, easily my worst pick, and that’s 5 games away from the actual result(Devils in 6, Devils in 7, Rangers in 7, Rangers in 6, Rangers in 5), so I get 5 points.

Here’s my post, and here’s grier’s. I scored 16 games off, and grier scored 12. I really screwed the pooch on that Devils-Rangers series, which grier picked perfectly. But I did pick both upsets, and got the Sharks’ series perfect. Here I go for round 2:

Pittsburgh-New York Rangers: Pittsburgh is on a roll, but so are the Rangers. The fact that the Pens can almost score at will will carry the series, but the Pens’ relatively weak blueline and young goalie will make this awesome to watch. Pens in six.

Montreal-Philadelphia: Montreal almost choked on a major… well, you get the idea. If they can keep their head out, they should roll the way they rolled against Boston in the first four. Philly is playing a very balanced game, but I don’t think they have enough firepower to keep up. Habs in six.

Detroit-Colorado: With Theodore playing all-world right now, the Avs are a very scary opponent. And that’s precisely the unknown quantity with the ever-talented Wings. I think Osgood, despite being labeled a backup most of his career, has starter skills, and will surprise people in this series. I’ll go a little out on a limb and say Wings in five.

Dallas-San Jose: The Sharks got past an opponent that pretty much had kryptonite for every aspect of the Sharks’ game, and they still got through it. If Zubov comes back, this series gets even tougher, but the Jumbo-Robidas/Daley matchup is less scary than Jumbo-Regehr/Sarich. Sharks in six.

Update:  For those that didn’t hear me on the Teal Spiel last Sunday, the mp3 is now available.  Give it a listen if you are so inclined.

Habs in 6 over Flyers – their PP can’t remain dormant that long, and Philly burned up too much energy fighting OV.
NYR in 5 over Pitt – proving once again, extended time off betwixt rounds one and two derail post season flow. Plus there’s no way Fleury can handle the “antics” as well as Marty did.
Avs in 6 over Wings – CO is just rolling at the right time of year (frickin’ Jose playing himself into another overpaid contract!).
Stars in 6 over Sharks – if the stars can play as well as they did in round 1, SJ is dead. If they get their top 2 d-men back, SJ is more dead.
(Consider it payback for round 1)

Just got to listen to the Teal Spiel, nice job and well thought out points. Have you guys thought about doing your own podcast?

Thanks, I appreciate your kind words.

We have thought about doing a podcast. I have the technical know-how and the equipment, the question is the details. We’ve talked about starting one up next season, or even the free agent season this year.

I’m very interested in the kind of content you’d want in such a podcast. Sharks only? Listener calls/emails? Length?

I posted what I might want in a podcast a while ago here.

I think you hit it right on the head in that link, the biggest thing I’d like to see is a regular and consistent schedule. I’d like something Sharks focused, but not necessarily only restricted to them. The format for the Teal Spiel works well and they do a good job, but there are some aspects of the show that irk me. Here’s what works for me:

-Intelligent and entertaining dialogue between 2 or more people regular people (from this blog and the couple times you were on the Teal Spiel, I think you and grier have this down)
-Dialogue between the hosts and listeners in the form of calls/emails. I think developing a good community around the podcast will be very important to keeping you guys enthusiastic about the project and having things stay fresh with regular listeners
-A good balance in setting (news/facts/humor/rants)
-If you’re doing a live show, then an mp3 available shortly after the show airs (within 1 or 2 days). The Teal Spiel usually takes a long time after the show airs to have an mp3 available and it sucks for me since I don’t live in the bay area and sometimes by the time I can get to listen the topics are old news.
-Occasional involvement by people within the Sharks organization or other parts of the NHL/teams other teams’ podcasters/bloggers (interviews/guest co-hosts)

Thanks b, good feedback. I agree with you on all things. I like the idea of a non-live show (though probably recorded in one fell swoop), so we can plan out a little more of what we want to say. And have a segment where we read emails or voice mails or something like that. As soon as this season is over, I’m going to be starved again for coverage, so that may be the best time to start it.

The other thing is I’d want it short enough so people could listen to it without it being a time commitment, and even then break it into segments so you could listen in pieces. 15-30 minutes sounds about right.

  6. bcyde says:

Yeah, that’s one of the things I forgot to put in there. I’d say anywhere from 20 – 45 minutes is good, however if an occasional one runs longer due to some good conversation I’m definitely fine with that.
