Korky in the Bay Area
November 6th, 2008, 2:30 pm
I just got word from a friend of mine that he just played pickup hockey with none other than Alexander Korolyuk. Before we all sit with bated breath at the exciting prospect of Korky returning to glory with the Sharks, my friend (who claimed to have been set up for 7 goals by Korky) says that he’s only in town to visit family. According to the link above, he’s got 18 points in 23 games for Mytishchi Atlant of the KHL this year. And I checked the KHL schedule- their last game was the 1st of November, and their next game is the 13th. Weird scheduling over there. So it’s at least feasible that Korky would be in town, and it’s pretty unlikely that my friend would lie to me like this. You’ll have to take my word for it on that- I’m less likely to believe the part about the 7 goals than the part about Korky.
There is nothing strange about the KHL schedule, as right now national teams in Europe are participating in the first part of the Eurotour (for example, Russia beat Sweden today, 1-0). Korky wasn’t called up to play for Russia, so looks like he decided to escape in the sun, and you can’t blame him, as it’s about to snow in Moscow (Mytischi is a suburb of Moscow).
So I find your story believable.
Maybe Doug Wilson should take him out for a good steak and see if Korky wants to have a real chance to win the Cup this year. He sure as hell has zero chance for a championship of any kind where he’s playing now. Plus, I’d sooner live in Lubbock, Texas before I live in Mytischi.
Corrected, thanks for the info.
You are now officially the go-to guy for European hockey on Sharks HA.
PS –
I think the bigger question is what was Korky thinking playing pick up hockey? How would be explained it to his owner if he got injured?
I guess he wasn’t aware of the all-seeing all-powerful eye that this blog wields. Only the very ill (and I put myself in that category) would find something like this newsworthy. And maybe he was counting on using the Jeff Kent (“I fell off the back of my pickup truck”) defense if he got hurt.

Ray Emery, who now plays in the KHL, was seen in Ottawa this past week as well so Korolyuk wasn’t the only guy taking a mini-vacation.
