post DOH 108 – Kovy Throws a Wrench

The Dudes were all set to talk about the Kovalchuk contract, but then the NHL goes and rejects it.  Mike and Doug try and figure out why that happened when the Hossa and Keith deals sailed through, and the interesting story of Simon Gagne.  There’s a good listener email about Big Joe, and Doug pulls out another crazy trade.

As per the discussion about whether to resign Joe or not…

I think there is danger he could walk without a contract after next year. Especially if he has a career year and takes the Sharks to a cup. Or if he has a career year and the Sharks choke for another reason other than him. It’s a small chance but still exists.

Doug you said no one has ever left the Sharks after being here a while and left as a free agent. Scott Hannan is the example you were looking for. When he left many people thought, as I did, he left not just for money but also cause he didn’t want to be a part of the Sharks after beginning to struggle in the PO’s. (3 2nd round exits and a confer. final exit)

Hannan left after the Edmonton debacle in 06-07, after eight years with the Sharks. A former first round pick by the Sharks and at the time our best defenseman. Not quite a Joe Thornton quality player no, but a precedent does exist.

None of this guarantees Jumbo would do the same of course. But I could imagine a scenario where if Joe has a monster year and the Sharks get swept out of the confer. final again, or some other failing, Joe could get swayed to get a chance at winning with another team. I doubt money would sway him but the prospect of ending one of the most promising NHL careers without a Stanley cup championship might.

I think right now winning a cup is a bigger motivation for Joe than dollars. I say lock him up now bring in who you can over the next few years and let that be Joe’s motivation.

    Just my 2cents.

Mike Rathje left as a free agent. Oh wait, you said “good players”. Nevermind.

On the Gagne trade. Gagne claims he would only accept a trade to Tampa, so it’s possible that while they had better deals from LA he wouldn’t waive his NTC to go there. I think he wants to play with Lecavalier and St. Louis.
