Brent Burns is still playing huge, at a point per game pace on defense.  But the rest of the Sharks, and the Sharks’ results, are a mixed bag.

Burns has been incredible offensively, but there is much to be desired on defense. That said, I can’t tell whether it is because he has had to carry Mueller, who seems to a liability out there, or if is because he is so willing to abdicate his defensive responsibilities for offense. In any case, I think he should be left back there, he should grow into the defensive side with time and potentially give the Sharks two legitimate ace defensmen. And while I miss Dan Boyle, Burns’s shot on the PP really opens up things on the top unit.

The 3rd period leads are frustrating, but this team has played more games AND traveled more miles than any other team to this point. I don’t find it particularly surprising that their legs are giving out on them at the end of games. With the Kings again struggling out of the gate, how many of us are ready for ANOTHER Kings-Sharks 1st round matchup?

    Why is Niemi even playing?
He got worse stats and plays generally worse in my opinion.

    • James says:

I thought with all the “young core” talk the *very least* we would see is a competition for the starting goalie position. Nothing of the sort. So far this year both TMac and DW have made several of head-scratching decisions.

    • CB says:

It’s true Stalock should have more starts by now. But for the moment he’s on IR.

  3. Brian says:

If the Sharks miss the playoffs, who will be fired – DW, TMac, or both?

    • Emily Hall says:

It’s been 11 years since a mid-season firing, but if the Sharks continue their downward trend, I’d say it’s a good time to do it again, but this time the coach & GM should go.

      • Tyler B says:

This is one of the unexpected dangers of Wilson’s “non-rebuild.” If we were in full rebuild mode, I don’t think anyone’s job would be in danger should the Sharks miss the playoffs. But by keeping the core, and really having no youth movement at all, there is an increased need to make the playoffs. If they miss the playoffs, I agree that at least one would be fired, but probably only the coach because there really aren’t any candidates out there for Wilson’s job.

  4. Tom says:

It’s amazing how bad losses to teams like Buffalo and Florida wake people up.

Honestly, I hope this years team crashes hard. Nothing is going to change until this org is FORCED to do something. Just my 2 cents.
