The Sharks play 5 of the worst teams in the NHL, and go 1-4.  That’s bad, but the Sharks do make two roster moves the Dudes agree with.

Thanks for the episode. More interesting than the games right now.

I understand that I put the value a bit low on Jagr, but even if he is a good player, he is a bit old.
But do you agree that he would be the perfect mentor for Hertl?
And what do you think that the sharks would have to pay to get him?

    • Mike says:

He’s more than a bit old :-). I do agree he’d be a great mentor to Hertl, but he’s leading the Devils in points right now, so it would cost quite a lot to get him. The Devils would probably want Braun or something like that.

Salty! Love it! Agree with everything you said.

  4. Tom says:

Elliot Freedman reporting he heard from a “couple sources” that DW reached out to Dan Bylsma. Then called DW who emphatically denied it. Which he would either way.

I tend to believe where there’s smoke there’s fire.

Either way I think Tmac is a great coach but not the right one for this team. I’d whole heartedly welcome a change. If it came though I’d still be expecting roster changes. Hopefully it wouldnt just be smokescreen.

    • Matt says:

Please, no. Big Pens fan. Bylsma was a poor offensive coach, his players were notoriously soft competitors, and the team consistently failed to produce in the clutch. Sound familiar?

It’s early – and not the playoffs – but watch a Pens game now. Same core, different team. Offensively explosive and defensively sound (best goals for / against differential in the league), ready from the drop of the puck, and play the full 60 minutes. Maybe the best team in the league right now, with more points in the standings per games played than any other team. Firing Bylsma was absolutely the right move.

I’m no TMac fan, but he’s got a weak roster. Whether Wilson fires TMac or not, I don’t think it will make much difference. It’s Wilson who needs to go. Clearly not a “rebuild” GM. Just doesn’t seem to fit with his mindset. He wants it all – to have a low payroll, develop young prospects, put star players on the ice, make the playoffs, keep his old favorite players around, and rebuild all at the same time. It doesn’t work like that. The Sharks would be much better off unloading the older vets all season, stock piling prospects and picks, and starting over with a new GM and coach when the regular season ends.

The Dudes raise a great point about Couture. If I were him, I would be watching what happens this year very closely, and all my options. He’s entering the prime of his career, yet on a sinking ship.

  5. Cyoor says:

Well at least it was half a good game against the ducks…

  6. Sophia says:

I’m telling you, I’m telling you, I’m telling you – it’s the wrath of Drew Remenda upon us

  7. Josh says:

Hey Mike what would you and Doug say about the thought of the Sharks dumping Niemi to try and pick up Marty Broduer. He obviously has a fantastic track record and could bring leadership that seems to be desperately needed inside the dressing room. The only downside is he’s old and although it’s only a temporary patch for a much larger issue, I feel like he can bring stability to a situation and allow the guys in front of him to focus more on their game. Love the show. Keep up the great work.
