I disagree with Mike – we can call Boedker a bust. With his poor play and Hertl always injured, resigning Patty at, say, 2 years $6 mil total is much more likely than I ever would have imagined. What do the dudes think? Where else are you going to get 20 goals / year for a hometown discount?
I also never imagined we’d be talking about how the Sharks resigning Patty. But with Ward and Boedker in major slumps, and Hertl’s ongoing injuries, it’s a fair point. Patty never gets injured and is always good for 20 goals. One of two things would need to happen for him to get resigned: Either he’d have to agree to a very low deal (think Brian Campbell numbers) or the Sharks would need to deal Boedker to another team without retaining salary. I’m not a big Marleau fan, but at this point, I’d vote to deal Boedker or leave him unprotected at the expansion draft, then try to sign Patty for a couple of years to a bargain basement contract.
It’s true Marleau is still a valuable contributor. A bonus is this year he’s scoring a lot more even strength goals. (Playing w/ Jumbo doesn’t hurt!)
But for him to resign, Boedker has to go, capwise. Boedker was pegged to be the Sharks now-and0future second line LW, or even top-line LW (so that Hertl could center the 3rd line). But I can see Meier jumping ahead of Boedker to play in the top 6Now, will DW want to pay Boedker $4 mil / year to play 3rd line LW and score 10 goals?!? So yeah, if the Sharks part ways w/ Boedker, that does open up a roster spot for a lefty …
Question for all (including the dudes): Which current Shark will be taken by the Golden Knights in the upcoming expansion draft?
