Take a look at Vegas draft picks for next 3 years(first 3 rounds), especially 2019 & 2020. They have so many picks they can trade picks for players. This team will dominate for years to come. They changed this draft to where Vegas could pick up all top 4 Defenseman, explaining when they went through their goalie injuries they didn’t drop off too much.
Just added California teams on this list but if you check out Calgary’s draft picks for next 3 years they’re screwed.

More proof the NHL is broken. They continue to not understand the words they use like “parity” in the league. When they reward teams that suck with all the highest picks it enables what we’ve seen for the last 10-15 years. Only a handful of teams winning the cup.

And this crap with Vegas was awful. Way too much talent for an expansion team. They do not deserve to experience this type of run in their first year. Sorry, this is insulting to fans of every expansion team since the 70’s.

I’m growing less and less interested in a league that is run incompetently.

      • Mike says:

To be fair, all leagues reward bad teams with high draft picks.

And Vegas has too much talent only in retrospect. Nobody, not the GMs, writers, players, or betting odds gave Vegas much of a chance to win. You have a guy that goes from 15 goals in two full seasons to 43 in a single season. Nine of out ten players in their top ten in scoring had a 20+ point jump vs last season (not James Neal). Fleury had a 15 point jump in ESSV% behind a defensive core that had Nate Schmidt and Brayden McNabb as their top defensemen by ice time. No one would have guessed that a backup goalie and six third-pairing guys could take this team to the conference finals.

        This was a friggin’ fluke.

  2. Matty says:

Great podcast Dudes. You really cheered me up and put things in perspective.

Based on the Sharks’ previous inability to land big name free agents, I don’t expect JVR or Kane to sign. Kane seems more like he’d go after a big market, i.e. the Kings. He’d be smart to stay in SJ though. I expect Neal to resign with the Knights.

If Thornton is willing to play third line center and be a pp specialist then yes, I’m interested. But not in the top 6.

It’s amazing how important goaltending and injuries are for the current NHL playoffs. There’s so much parity, those can be difference makers. Right now the Knights have both. i.e. If Marchessault or Karlsson gets injured, the Knights are screwed. Just like when Kane got injured, the Sharks were toast. I think if Malkin had been healthy, the Penguins would have had a legitimate shot at a threepeat. But they had no chance without him healthy.

Mike’s hedge bet sounds smart to me, especially with the Preds out now. Lightning have to be the clear favorite.

Doug, the Blue Jackets didn’t merely give Karlsson away – they paid first and second round picks for the Knights to draft him! Depending on the rest of Kalrsson’s career with the Knights, that looks like a candidate for the worst NHL deal ever, especially if the picks turn into solid players for the Knights: you give up a 40 goal scorer who is a top-line center leading the NHL in +/-, plus a first, plus a second for … nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Marchessault scored 30 goals for the Panthers last year.

Important to keep in mind the Vegas draft was the first ever salary cap era expansion draft. Plus, the first time these “side deals” were allowed. The Knights’ taking advantage of both is what made their roster better than any previous expansion team. I’ve read no evidence to support Doug’s assertion that Fleury, Marchessault, or Neal were available to “any NHL team.” Rather, their teams targeted those players as expendable due to a need for cap space and a desire to steer the Knights away from other players the Penguins, Panthers, and Blue Jackets valued more. So the success of the Knights makes the GM’s of those teams look bad, not necessarily the entire NHL. I don’t know who looks worse: the Panthers – who gave the Knights their coach (inevitable Jack Adams winner), Marchessault, and Reilly Smith – or the Blue Jackets. Also there are several former Penguins players on the team, so they had previous chemistry.

  3. Nadir says:

When people were on here a few weeks ago talking about the Knights winning the cup I thought it was laughable. No way possible. The Kings were a bad team and the Sharks had too many key players injured. The Jets would beat them soundly. But the Knights went through the Jets pretty easily. The two teams were pretty even, but Fleury was the difference. He will win the Conn Smythe, even if Vegas somehow loses the final. At 12-3 in the playoffs, Vegas should be the favorite. I think they can beat either Eastern team.cAs the Dudes would say, I am salty.

    • James says:

Yes, it’s so frustrating the Knights are in the final. Definitely rooting for the Caps. Ovie should have his name on the cup!

  4. Theo says:

I guess I am the only one in Sharks Territory who is not happy Kane came to the Sharks, or signed with them. I just can’t root for him, but give him credit for good behavior since he’s been in teal. Maybe I’m cynical, but I have the sense this big contract was the goal. Now we’ll see if he keeps his cool or goes back to his old form, breaking up locker rooms and getting into legal trouble. That’s not a fan slinging mud – those are just facts – his past is very checkered. First Torres, now Kane. Perhaps the Sharks are intentionally trying to shed their good boy rep. Plus in 4-5 years the Sharks are going to have the oldest NHL core ever. I used to lose their policy of 5-year max deals, no matter what, not longer. Those days are gone.

    • James says:

Someone beat me to comment on the news! I disagree, I think the Kane singing is excellent. Sure, it’s too long, but that is the only way you are going to get him. The Sharks desperately need a 30 foal scorer with speed and attitude. He’s going to be a great player for years. I laughed out loud at Wilson’s press release quote, extolling the Sharks as a destination of choice. He really thinks Tavares is listening, I guess. In all seriousness, if the Sharks could somehow land Tavares, they’d overnight be cup favorites. But I don’t see it. JVR on the other hand is a real possibility.

  5. Reggie says:

Mike, assuming Tavares stays in LI with Lou, are there any other #1 or #2 centers you’d like to see the Sharks go after July 1?

  6. Tyler says:

Love that we signed Kane. But not happy about the contract. Compares unfavorably with Marchessault. Both play top line left wing and are only 5 months apart in age. Kane has never come close to the 75-point year Marchessault has had. Yet Kane’s is 63% more money and 2 years longer.

    JM … 75 points 27 goals 99 hits = 6 years @ $5 mil ($30 mil total)
    EK … 54 points 29 goals 159 hits = 7 years @ $7 mil ($49 mil total)

Plus Kane has a history of injury problems, And yes, I admit, I thought his rep would keep him from getting absolute top dollar like this.

So, I guess Couture gets the same deal or more. How will that work?

    • Teddy says:

I was surprised by 7 years, but not the average annual amount. Kane has been in the league much longer than Marchessault, which is why he got much more money. Marchessault signed a bad deal – he could have gotten much more as a UFA especially after his playoff performance. Bottom line is the Sharks needed Kane more than he needed them. He could have made that money from another team July 1. The Sharks not only signed him, they kept him from the competition – he wanted to play in the west. Kane was never going to take the team friendly deals that Marleau and Thornton roputine made for SJ.

Also I think he will score more points with the Sharks than he did with the Jets or Sabres. I know we said that about Boedker too so who knows. But he just looked like an amped up player in teal, someone who could go for 30 / 60 for 3-4 straight years.

The injury issue has not been mentioned enough and we’ve all experienced it with him now. Maybe he needs to play a little less physical. Your post shows just how many hits he doles out.

Remember there’s a trade option in the contract to select teams and the salary goes down over the contract. So if he’s a healthy scratch at age 32, we may deal him or buy him out. His rep is a non-issue these days, he’s proven that, but staying healthy is a big deal.

I think this is really about DW 1) needing the Sharks to always be at least a bubble playoff team for revenue and 2) being all in for a cup next year, in what he sees as Jumbo’s last year as a Shark. He is willing to overpay a little for Kane, knowing Jumbo will sign for a discount after being overpaid last year. He’s thinking the Sharks can win it all and will go after any big time UFA’s including JVR and Tavares, though I think we can safely say Tavares is staying in LI now that they made the smart move of hiring Lou.

But looking at the west, with Vegas in the final, I think the Sharks can legitimately say, why not us? If Jones, Burns, and Vlasic return to form, and everyone stays healthy, this team is one of the top 3 in the West. Add a player or two along the way, and who knows what can happen …

Contract wise, I think the real question is Couture – does he also get a $7 mil / year deal? He’s at least as important to the team as Kane, though older.

    • James says:

This sounds a little crazy. Kane fills a gaping hole in the Sharks offense and top line. And he’s a UFA – that’s not the time when anyone takes a hometown discount, that’s when they cash in. Just think how much money teams like the Wild, Kings, or Blues would have paid to sign him, all WC teams the Sharks will compete with. Injuries are always part of the game and the Marchessault deal was played perfectly by Vegas, just as they’ve had the “midas touch” all season. Sure, Kane could get injured and miss half the season. He could also play 75 games and score 40 goals. That’s the fun of it. And keep in mind, in years 6 and 7 the pay is much lower, so the cap hit won’t be too bad. I see Martin going out the door, with the Sharks retaining some salary, in order to subsidize the cap hit next year by Kane. And, I think we’ll sign Thornton for cheap and someone else to be an impact player, either this summer or before the deadline. I’m excited – the Sharks could be very good next year.
