The Sharks have now lost five straight, without almost any bright spots on the team. All options are on the table- what are the Sharks to do?

Great podcast guys as usual, love the renewed commitment to weekly podcasts. It always seems that when things are bad there is more to talk about IMO.

Here’s what I think, I think unless they start winning immediately, like go on a run over the next few games, I expect DeBoer to be fired before thanksgiving. Maybe Christmas, but I doubt it. You guys are right when saying there is little else DW can do to help. And we’ve seen that when a coach gets fired it often, not always, but often gives the team a boost and right now the bleeding needs to stop. You can’t win your division in the first few months of hockey but you sure can lose it.

I agree 100% on the goalie situation. Dell, he should be done. But honestly I said that before the playoffs last year. He’s awful.

Doug, great call on Jones playing better when he has competition! I hadn’t thought of that and I think you’re dead on. Brining in just another guy to compete for the position could really help.

Lastly, if I could get a decent return for Vlasic, like a decent pick and a prospect, I’d do it ASAP. This team hasn’t earned the right to stay together and I’d rather see a move now rather than at the deadline.

Anyways sorry for the long rant.

Actually, I don’t really expect PDB to get fired unless 2 things happen. 1) If the goaltending improves, and the Sharks are still losing 2) if Karlsson improves, and the Sharks keep losing. If a Tippett was unemployed, sure, I’d expect a coaching change. But with no obvious replacement candidate, the team’s star playing terribly, and the goaltending this bad, why bother ditching the most successful coach in Sharks history? Wilson needs to go out and get some depth players. Bergmann, Gregor, Marleau, and yes Thornton are all barely NHL players. That’s a lot of bad.

  3. Nazir says:

It’s very early, but we’re seeing the risks of investing huge money in a single player during the cap era. The old sports logic was, great players are always worth it. Think of how lambasted the Raiders were lambasted for trading Mack. Now, everyone thinks the Raiders won the trade. They saved huge money and drafted well, with another first rounder this year still coming from the trade. What’s worse for SJ vs the Bears is, at least Mack is playing great. SJ made all the sacrifices – picks, roster players, cap space – and the star you got is playing terribly. Now you lack cap space to improve at goalie when Jones / Dell are not NHL quality, or add forwards when the young prospects did not make the team. U less DW pulls off a miracle multi player trade – and maybe Vlasic is a chip for that – this team will be bad all year.

Re having non NHL caliber starters, look at at how much difference just having Simek back makes. Now we get Melker which will help too. So I agree that DW needs to add depth players. I think if he does well be fine. It’s really serious though, because he needs not only 2-3 decent forwards, but also a goalie. And as Mike would say, in the actual NHL (not a video game) how do you manage to add those players?

File this under TMI, but I have been going through a rough time for a while now. Even when the team isn’t winning, following the Sharks always raises my spirits. But listening to the Dudes even more so. Thanks guys.
