I can barely bring myself to watch the games these days, but I still listen to every minute of The Dudes.
Personally, I did myself a favor and wrote off this whole year as a period of rebuilding. When I watch games, I’m evaluating youngsters and non-regulars. I don’t force myself to watch the whole game if I think I’ve seen enough and I sure as hell am not hyped for ‘the stretch run’.
I’m working on the assumption that Wilson will manage to kill off at least one of these undesirable contracts. Kinda hoping to see Burns go to Dallas to be closer to his ranch and a chance to play with Pavs again.
I like the positivity, but how can we call this year part of rebuilding. The core remains. I could adopt the notion if they didn’t sign Hertl plus dealt away a contract such as Couture’s. But they went in the opposite direction, rewarding a core that can’t win. They just keep fooling them selves each year. “It’s the coach. It’s the goaltending. It’s the third line.” Well yes, these are all issues, but the real problem is the core can’t win plus is massively overpaid, which hurts the depth. Again, this is the opposite if a rebuild. Their current self-deception seems to be “Eklund is coming.” He’ll help, but he can’t play every position.
Mike made an aside which I think is a really good but sad point – as bad as the team is, Reimer’s excellent year has made them look better than they actually are.
can’t believe they actually signed hertl. this team is not going to make the playoffs again until wilson retires and someone else comes in. we’re a one-line team. if you shut down the hertl line, you beat us. end of story. sad to say ek65 and hertl are going to regret their decisions to sign here. it will be interesting to see what happens after a couple more years of losing. after 5 straight years of no playoffs, will ek65 ask for a trade? who on earth would take him? at least there’s the vegas cup. i’m looking forward to the playoffs, especially eastern teams. it’s wide open.
I don’t know who or what TRex is, but they totally called all this back in January:
“Anyway, here’s three crazy predictions for this calendar year. One, the Sharks will miss the playoffs again. Two, Hertl will be a Shark next year. Three, Doug Wilson will not be the GM next year and his health may be a factor in that.”
I was excited when Wilson announced he was stepping down. I thought, finally the Sharks are going to bring inb an adult who will clear house and put together a solid roster. But reading this quote from Will, seems like the Sharks are continuing to live in fantasy land, overvaluing their core rather than seeing it for what it is: ” … we have the guys in the room to do it and we’re pushing forward, not to take any steps back and say it’s a whatever year plan or whatever.” Huh!??!?!
I honestly think the Sharks are in the worst position of any team in the league. Their cap space is minimal, they are grossly overpaying a tone of players, they have a losing core locked up for years, plus they’re burning money on Jones and Kane who are no longer on the roster. Long past time to blow this core up and rebuild. Instead, management refuses. Every year it’s a different excuse. Replace the coach. Replace the goalie. Replace the third line center. Even the new Athletic beat writer is awful. Fortunately, we don’t have to watch any more Sharks hockey and can root for some great teams in the playoffs. Seriously debating taking next year off as a Sharks fan. I’ve already seen this movie, 3 years in a row.
What’s crazy is that things can get even worse. The core is bad now but they’re aging! In particular, Vlasic, Karlsson, Couture, Burns are all past their prime and in decline.
Nice, dudes. The world almost feels regular. For a moment.

Why haven’t any of the press asked the Sharks about Hertl’s knee? Seems like a risk to sign that particular player to such a long term contract.

Only 5 podcasts this whole season. I hope the dudes are withering away…
but then, I have to admit that I had a hard time watching the sharks this year too…
