Sharks lose game five in a ‘gutless’ fashion, as Jeremy Roenick might say, and the Dudes have some strong emotions about it.

Listened to first 12 minutes, I’ll listen to the rest tomorrow. This is like the opposite if SLNC, instead of being uplifting its just making me all the more sadder. Still, kudos for podcasting while still feeling the affects of that game.

  2. Joel says:

It’s one thing for him to say it once, but he just piled it on. He pointed to his heart and winked to the camera when asked why Marleau wasn’t performing. Regardless of White and Wallin’s plus/minus, he said only 19 guys worked hard tonight.

To me, it looked like he made an off-the-cuff comment, bit off more than he could chew, and just ran with it instead of backpedalling.

And in his tweetfest, the following is probably what’s going to burn those bridges Randy was talking about:

@Jeremy_Roenick Completely agree with you but did his lack of heart ever come up in the locker room while you were in San Jose?

    @Jeremy_Roenick
    @ScottyHockey no comment! Lol

But he’s his own person and can do whatever he wants. In any case, I’d rather Versus put on an analyst that talks about Corsi, Fenwick and Zone Start percentages over Grit Rating, Heart Units, and Moxie differential.

    • Mike says:

I’m with you on the last sentence, but I’d still take JR over all the other cliche-spewers out there.

I would suggest you guys do another podcast tomorrow, you know, after you’ve slept on it and have a little bit of a clearer head. Don’t get me wrong, the raw emotions are great to hear. I was also at the tank today and trust me, I was LIVID walking out, so I understand where you’re coming from. I, too, am ready for this series to be over. The Sharks are wreaking havoc on my well-being!

I know it’s hard to recall how great of a game they were playing in the first 42 minutes, but they really were. The game wasn’t a “stinker” per se, cause at least they showed flashes of brilliance before the last 18 mins. And don’t forget they were outplayed for most of game 4, only to come roaring back with a chance to go to OT. And we know in OT, we’re money. The Wings are in desperation mode, and it shows. The 4th win is always the hardest to get.

Also remember that we are a great road team and CAN win at the Joe. Datsyuk and Zetteberg are not invincible — though at times it did seem so today — but they can be neutralized, as we showed early in the series. And we only have to win ONE game. Just one.

Maybe another podcast isn’t in the cards, (although that’d be awesome cause you guys rock!) but this series is not over. The Sharks still have the upper hand. Yes, the third period meltdown was atrocious, but if the Sharks have showed us anything this year that differs from previous years, it’s that they are resilient and bounce back from adversity quite well. Let’s hope that trend continues on Tuesday.

  4. Ryan says:

Mike is such a downer in this podcast! I don’t remember the last time you had such a pessimistic outlook on the Sharks (save the terrible losing streak earlier in the season). The Sharks looked on the top of their game all night, even in that final penalty kill right before Detroit scored their first comeback goal. The first goal: Niemi gets knocked out of position, only reason it goes in. Second goal: Why was Cleary allowed to sit there and pound away at the puck? Nail in coffin goal: only one player in the NHL could have made that happen…Datsuk. And he happens to be on their team. All is not lost by any means. The Sharks were better on the road against LA too. We’ll win game 6, exorcise our Detroit demons again and be fine. Go Sharks!

  5. bcyde says:

I would give $100 and my Qdoba rewards card for a Sharks win on Tuesday.

  6. Ruben says:

I would give up online gaming on my PS3 for the near future 🙂

As far as JR, I wouldn’t call Patty’s performance gutless. Lazy, though, sure seems spot on to me, which is unacceptable but a tag that creeps up on Marleau far too often. I can understand getting pickpocketed by Datsyuk, but his back check afterwards was weak as was his fly-by on Kronwall on the tying goal. The real question is, how do you motivate Marleau? Public shaming by coaches and line demotions have never worked with him. That blunder against the Red Wings all those years ago led Ron Wilson to rip him, which destroyed an entire year for Marleau. I think unless he is injured, you ride with him on the top line.

But still, I think its even money that the Sharks win G6, and I would take 2-1 odds that the Sharks win in G7 if necessary. And I liked McGinn and Ferriero, maybe it is time to sit Nichol for a game as I think he has been the weakest of all 5 guys rotating on the 4th line. He is only taking 6 or 7 faceoffs a game anyways.

  7. MJ says:

thank gawd i missed the game last night.

is it time for the hunger strike?

  8. Gabe says:

I would Add a no coffee clause to my playoff beard

  9. Evilducks says:

In my defense, I was just hypothesizing about when Eager would be useful. I think he matches up against the Nucks a lot better than Detroit. Tom was talking about Vancouver for game 3! Blame where blame is due!

  10. Hannah says:

    I would donate:
    -a half bag of doritos
    -a jamba juice smoothie
-three ziploc bags with cracker crumbs
-a ham & provolone with light mayo on white sandwich.

i’d even buy nic wallin a hamburger.

  11. Matt says:

    I offer my first born.

  12. Nick says:

I think there’s a bag of 1/2 eaten ruffles on my coffee table I could pitch in.

I’d like to point out that Vancouver turned it around against Chicago, and that we’ve been a lot better at closing out on the road. Without running stats I’d guess over 3/4 of our series close outs have been on the road. Lets hope JR’s comments and their pride fire this team up and re-“stake the heart of the dragon” on Tuesday.

    GO SHARKS!

  13. Ruben says:

“I am not a Patrick Marleau fan. I’m not going to pretend to be. But also will tell you that he is an incredible incredible talent…

But I have my opinion of his determination and effort level, especially with the amount of money that he makes”

    – Jeremy Roenick speaking with Dave Pollack

Damn… this isn’t like he is calling out a guy like Matt Cooke or Jordin Tootoo. Patrick Marleau is (at least perceived) to be a well liked guy. The only thing I can think of is that JR saw the things day in and day out that we only see in spurts on the ice.

Seeing my favorite hockey player eviscerated like this has been pretty rough. What’s next, Cal Ripken did steroids?

    • Patrick says:

Honestly I think a possibility is JR said it somewhat to be provocative on the air, and then doesn’t want to look like a typical media wuss and backpedal/issue an apology.

I just find it very, very hard to believe that if Marleau’s effort and determination were that much in question in the locker room they would have inked him for four more years.

  14. The Meat Rind says:

I’ve got a friendly black cat I’ll donate. I’ll throw in his food dish, too. Disclaimer: he poos in the house, but the Sharks do sometimes, too.

  15. Tom says:

The Sharks already took my dignity – I have nothing left to give… 😐

  16. Tom says:

I changed my mind. I am going to discuss the game.

Here are my post game 5 thoughts:

  17. Emily Hall says:

Hey Dudes! I’m the woman who yelled out that I loved DOH. I fully expected not to see a podcast til tonight. Have to admit that I probably wouldn’t have listened to the show anyway cuz I was despondent after the Sharks FAILED to close out the series at home. I know that statistically coming back from a 0-3 series deficit is close to impossible, but this is the Red Wings the Sharks are playing and the Sharks are the team that have the “choking” label. I’m afraid that the Sharks mindset will be their undoing. I hope I’m wrong.
Anyway I’d like to donate a the 3rd place prize I won in Puck Daddy’s Holiday Card/X’mas carol contest for the “sexiest song ever written about Patrick Marleau” called Marleau Baby http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVyB6oVRcog the prize was 2 DVD’s:
Chicago Blackhawks- Great moments and classic games & Washington Capitals – 10 great games. Perhaps the Sharks can learn something from them.

    • Ruben says:

      Hah, that was awesome

      • Emily Hall says:

Thanks. Perhaps Marleau can get pumped up for tonight by watching it. He needs every bit of encouragement he can get (even though it is kind of backhanded encouragement).

  18. Andy C says:

Ha ha, I’d offer my first born too… but only because she kept me up half of lastnight as she wouldn’t sleep thanks to her teething!

I think the quote you were looking for “A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse” which were Shakespeare’s rather dramatic last words for Richard III… following his rather stupid cavalry charge straight into the middle of a bog at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485.

Lets hope its the Sharks making history tonight by closing it out in 6.
