Thanks Greg!
Anybody willing/able to do my fantasy hockey draft for me tomorrow? Nobody I would trust more than a Dudes listener. It’s at 8:00pm eastern time, and I’m guessing won’t take more than an hour.
Damn sad I missed the para-scope something came up hopefully it happens again 🙂
Looks like the over on Raffi’s suspension was the right call. I’d say he got what he deserved. Wonder if they’ll cut him?
They can’t cut the most they can do is open up a roster spot while still absorbing his cap hit. Even after the suspension is over the most they can do is send him down to AHL.
Also I think the suspension length was rather steep, I fully expect it to be appealed and if held up by Bettman it will go to a neutral arbitrator. I think 15-25 games would of been fine given his history, but the lack of consistency with this league when it comes to giving out suspensions is infuriating.
I think the biggest legal problem with the suspension was how they said:
“Although he is not defined as a repeat offender under the terms of the CBA”, we will treat him like a repeat offender anyway.
I agree that Torres is super stupid who did this considering his background, but I do not know if they have the right to suspend him this long under the CBA.
This is a carrier ending suspension for Torres due to that the sharks would have to keep a roster spot for him during those games to make it count. The sharks can do that now and then I guess, but it will probably take him over a season to get rid of those 41 games, and with basically 3 years in a row out of the game, I don’t think that he will be able to come back.
The CBA reads, “It is important to note that even if a Player is not defined as a repeat offender, his past history may come into consideration when determining future Supplemental Discipline.” Though that seems to negate the whole point of the 18-month period to clear repeat offenders, it covers the NHL in cases like this.
My understanding is “repeat offender status” only impacts how much his fine is, not how long the suspension can be.
Deserved, and unfortunate as Torres could be a Joel Ward-type player if he had more self control. He is on his last chance now, if he hasn’t used it up already. Still waiting to hear from DW regarding his thoughts, he was on Torres’s side after the Stoll hit, pretty quiet so far.

Sharks need to release Torres. The comeback story was a great one. But this is too many suspensions. Too big of a risk. Too big of a distraction. Let the young guys play.
You can’t release players, this isn’t the NFL. The most they could do is suspend him, which would make them look like a joke to players.
Dudes, I love your podcast and always tune in. I was once a die-hard Sharks fan, but became a casual fan as my work-life revved up. Then, I lost my interest a couple of years ago due to the concussions epidemic and inconsistent disciplinary suspensions. I’d say I’m now a casual fan. But I tuned in to the opener and was immediately turned off by the NHL not suspending Lucic or Brown. How can a player (Brown) leave his feet and hit Couture in the head and get no penalty or suspension? How can a player (Lucic) with 2 previous suspensions and several match penalties skate across the ice and attempt to attack a player with his back turned and the puck nowhere in sight? The NHL thinks these plays are Ok? Takes all the fun out of the sport for me.
Please Dudes!
I think the dudes have gone into shock because the Sharks are doing so well. There’s very little to complain about. Without the complaints and snarky comments, what kind of “Dudes on Hockey” podcast would it be?
