December 20th, 2016, 11:25 pm
The Sharks have a surplus of forwards, such that they can scratch Joel Ward and still beat Calgary badly. But questions loom on the horizon.

File this under highly unlikely but
Braun + hertl for shattenkirk ?
Vlassic – shattenkirk pair would look really nice together plus if the Sharks are going to lose a d-man in the expansion draft for nothing might as well get something.
My healthy forward lineup card:
Marleau-Jumbo-Pavs
Donkey-Logan-Labanc
Meier-Hertl-Boedker
Wingles/Nieto/Haley-Tierney-Ward
With Goldobin, Carpy, Goodrow, Sorensen and O’Regan nipping at their heels.
D doesn’t need adjusting, but I’d like to see Martin or Dillon get a few nights off.
Then there’s Heed, Mueller and Ryan with the ‘Cuda waiting for their chances, too.
Love the organizational depth at the moment. DW really deserves a lot of credit for this.
P.S. Donskoi is exempt from the expansion draft.
Forgot about Karlsson.
Hertl Jumbo Pavs
Marleau Couture Lebanc
Meier Tierney Donskoi
Karlson Wingels Ward
Though I’d sit Boedker, I would not deal him as the roster will need a lefty forward next year when Marleau is gone, plus the expansion draft may take a forward.
Why is Donskoi exempt?
Copied from link below
* All first- and second-year professionals, as well as all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection (and will not be counted toward their club’s applicable protection limits).

Donskoi will still be considered a 2nd year pro as he is is on year 2 of his ELC.
How are they defining professional? Donskoi was pro in Europe for a few years.
Could be professional North American hockey or that it is as I said earlier, 2nd year of his contract; not 100 % sure. But he is defiantly exempt.
Great episode. Though I am not convinced Marleau is gone next year. Right now, he’s a much better player than Boedker, who was signed to replace Patty. Marleau is playing over 20 min a game, on the top line. You could not trust Boedker with those kind of minutes. Someone needs to be a left-handed top 6 forward.
Good episode guys. I didn’t know Ward had a no-move clause. Best case draft scenario: Boedker catches fire and starts scoring, Hertl comes back healthy, Sharks protect 8 skaters including Braun and Hertl, then Vegas picks Boedker and we can keep Tierney.
You mentioned Ward must be protected, but Kurz’s article says otherwise. 4th period lists him as having a “limited” no trade clause. Who knows if “limited” no trade contracts must be protected. I’m sure we’ll hear more about the rules as the trade deadline approaches.
