The Dudes have been right all season. They said be patient with Karlsson, and he found his game. They said wait for the team to gel, and they did. They said give PDB a break and he’s made all the right moves. Hopefully they’re also right about goaltending in the playoffs. I think they will be.
A bit surprised no mention in the episode of Hertl playing center and his great line. Especially Kane who at one point had the most goals of anyone in the league this calendar year. Wilson must love finally seeing the Hertl he dreamed of – a #2 center.
Breaking up Karlsson and Dillon sounds like a bad idea. Hope I’m wrong there.
I actually don’t think the Sharks should do anything at the deadline. Their chemistry is so strong. They look like they’re having so much fun. I like what someone wrote here about Karlsson’s return as like a deadline pickup.
Love this podcast but it’s factually inaccurate to say the Sharks have league average goaltending. Reality check: they’re 31 out of 32 teams. Average right now would be .903 save %. Sharks are at .891.
The way I heard that section of the podcast was Doug saying, yes, Jones’ save % is bad (.896 as I write) but over the past 3 seasons he’s been average or better.
But I’d argue what’s happened is teams now have the book on Jones. Everyone knows he has a terrible glove hand and tends to give up goals very early in games.
So from my armchair the question isn’t, “Is Jones an average goalie?” It’s, “Can Jones improve the holes in his game?”
I don’t want to put words in Doug’s mouth, but I think he meant historically, not just this season. I don’t think it’s arguable that he’s above average this season. Clearly not.
Just checking the stats quickly, he was above league 2 out of three years (regular season) with the Sharks, and obviously below average this season. I wouldn’t personally make the argument that he’s definitely above average, but when you look at his .923 playoff save percentage in the year the Sharks went to the Cup (and .935 and .928 the other years), I think it’s a defensible position.
Yeah, but who cares about the last 2 seasons, what matters is that this season goalies are wildly inconsistent. Per yahoo today: “Based on their shot quality against, [the Sharks goalies] cost San Jose almost 24 goals. That’s about four wins, or eight points in the standings.” In other words, by not having corrected this situation already, it could cost SJ the division. As you guys have said that’s a big deal this year.
With the Haley move, I wonder if DW is trolling the Sharks.
But seriously. the Duchene trade makes me appreciate DW all the more. The Blue Jackets gave up 2 firsts and a blue chip prospect for Duchene who is a UFA to be. Sure, he may resign with Columbus, but he may not. DW made the same roll of the dice for Kane, and then for Karlsson, but gave up much less in the deals.
Hilarious you guys mentioned Haley and then he gets picked up by SJ. I don’t understand who is evaluating 4th liners for the Sharks. Let the talented Fehr go, overpay Radil then bench him, and claim Haley. Huh? No team with Haley as a starter and the league’s second worst save % is going far in the playoffs.
I don’t know how SJ managed to land Nyquist, or where he’s going to play (maybe the 3rd line?) but what a year for DW. Minus the head-scratcher Haley move – and with Nyquist added here’s hoping Haley doesn’t make the starting loneup – what a season for DW, especially if Karlsson signs. My concern is that of all playoff teams in the West, the Sharks have the best roster of skaters, but the worst goaltending.

I don’t remember saying (or even thinking) that Sharks goaltending is league average, but of course you are correct. For the Sharks, the truth hurts.
