It certainly appears Timo Meier will be traded before the deadline, and the Dudes evaluate which teams are left, and what kind of direction the Sharks will go next.

Right one cue, the trade happens immediately after you record. All I can say is, this trade is embarrassing for the Sharks. A first, a “maybe-a-first,” and 4 of underperforming players. This was a chance to get at least 1 game-changer, franchise player. Nope. So far Grier is 0-2 as a GM. 0-3 if you could the guys he signed for this year. who haven’t panned out at all. I’m pulling for him, but this is about the worst case scenario. When you’re going, “Well, at least we go a first,” for a 40-goal scorer, you lost the trade. I would never have made this deal. Might as well keep him and pay him for another year, waiting for a better offer.

  2. TRex says:

What’s odd about this trade is how much it conflicts with what we expected. Grier said he wants to “turn this thing around quickly.” Few of these guys fit that category. Seem mostly like projects, even long shots, to be difference-makers. Maybe even longshots to make the NHL. And second, I don’t see Grier’s personality as a player reflected in these guys. I’m disappointed.

  3. Nazir says:

I could understand not getting the Devils top prospect. But I would hqve expected #2, worst case #3 but would have been bummed. We get … #5. WTF

  4. Heather says:

Grier seems to value quantity over quality. I would disagree with that strategy. That’s why SJ won the Thornton and Burns deals handily. From the NJ SB Nation: “… this appears to be highway robbery by Tom Fitzgerald.”

  5. Havoc says:

Claude Lemieux still playing for the Devils lol.

And nothing extra for SJ if Meier signs longterm with NJ?

    • James says:

Lemiueux was a Devil, Grier was an NJ Assistant Coach.

    • Tim says:

Pure speculation but maybe Meier and Grier had a minor falling out. Timo mildly critical of the Sharks in his final interview. Grier unable to convince Timo to sign a 1 year extension term and get a better trade return. Then Timo is “injured” but immediately plays fully healthy for NJ.

  6. Inebriatedsharksfan says:

Im on the fence with this trade. To say Grier got fleeced is an exaggeration but at the same time the return does seem underwhelming. The devils obviously got the best player and get better immediately so its easy to say they won this trade. I still give Grier the benefit of the doubt until we see what management does with the package they got in return. At the end of the day its too early to give this trade a final grade for atleast a couple of years.

    • Tim says:

I think what upsets people is the report that an offer from another team involved a top prospect, though 1 less pick and 1 less player. (The 4th player the Sharks got is a salary cap throwaway.) I’d have taken that top prospect deal instead.

  7. Tim says:

Mike, could you explain something about Meier’s contract. Could the Sharks have re-upped Meier as an RFA, then traded him now and retained some salary? That way, they’re dealing a player with another year at a reasonable rate and would get a much better return. Or am I completely mistaken about how RFA’s work, which is more than likely.
