The Sharks played great hockey for 95% of the season opener. Then Eklund’s missed open net and Nedeljkovic’s two inexplicable errors cost them a point. Smith’s penalty seemed to start the downward spiral, even though the Sharks killed off the penalty.
The good news is, the forwards now have more than 1 scoring line and the D are quite decent. They are so much better at breaking out of the zone.
Unfortunately, the post-Blackwood search for a goalie looks like it might continue this season. Nedeljkovic cost us the game and Askarov was terrible in pre-season. Hopefully Askarov figures it out real fast. Otherwise, the Sharks will be looking to trade and they don’t have many chips they can part with.
At first I was disappointed Smith wasn’t gettin a chance to be 2C. But now I see the strategy. What must make Celebrini and Smith particularly tough to defend is they’re both great passers *and* both score goals. It’s not like defending Jumbo and Cheechoo, where you knew Jumbo was looking to pass every time. With Celebrini and Smith both being lifelong centers, on any given scoring opportunity, either could pass or shoot. And we saw that dynamic at the Gah-den.
Agree the Sharks need to get at least an average goalie. It’s frustrating watching them force Askarov out there. He’s not NHL ready. The book on him seems to be shoot high.
And today Mack is tied for the league lead in scoring with Nathan MacKinnon. Crazy! I know it’s only 16 games, but he has more points than McDavid right now. Teams are going to start focusing on the top line. Look for things to get tougher for Celebrini and Smith.

Mana to my ears. Always savor the season preview.
Confused – didn’t Cooper sign an extension already?

With average NHL goaltending, the sharks would be 2-0 and in first place in the division.
Yeah the Sharks def need to swing a goalie trade.
I know it’s still early in year 2, but I have to think Warsofsky’s seat is at least warm.
Wasn’t Smith drafted to be a center?
