Mike and Doug are in full killing-time mode, considering we are in the middle of the summer, and the Sharks have laid low thus far.  It doesn’t keep the Dudes from talking hockey, engaging with the listeners, and making wild predictions.

Lol you guys are making me vomit.

Michalek is not more exciting than Sharp. Michalek is not more dynamic. Sharp is the better offensive player. Sharp is a better skater, stickhandler, shooter, and man is he good at moving off the puck. Very creative at getting open. Michalek has bad balance and bad stickhandling. He would be as good as Marian Hossa if he were good at those two things. But he does not have the natural skill of hossa or gaborik. Sharp is a more skilled, and man is he more exciting. Michalek is boring. I don’t know what games you guys watch. If Ales Hemsky is what’s exciting in a player, and idk if Doug Murray was a forward who didn’t hit he would be what’s boring about players. Then Sharp would definitely be closer to the Hemsky spectrum than Michalek. Definitely.

    Side note…

Murray is a #3 defenseman on a peewee team. wait, a bad peewee team. Maybe even a #2, if you’re lucky, on a really really bad pee wee team.

You can’t compare Versteeg with Pavelski. Pavelski is underpaid.

Could Tallon have signed Versteeg and Barker for less without the qualifying offers issue? Maybe, probably. But compared to most similar players in the league, are Versteeg and Barker’s salaries out of line? Maybe, but not drastically.

If you remember correctly, Vlasic and Ehrhoff were both given 3.1 million dollar per year salaries after just plain decent seasons, with little offensive production. Barker is coming off at least as good as saeson as Ehrhoff had two seasons ago, if not better, and he got similar money. So at least with Barker, when you compare him to Ehrhoff and Vlasic, and the contracts they got after the 0708 season, you can’t say he’s overpaid, at least compared to Ehrhoff and Vlasic. And i’m sure you could find plenty of forwards out there (if you actually tried) who aren’t as good as Versteeg but who are getting paid more.

These are facts. But you’re only looking for contracts that support your argument. Which, fine.. you’re stuck to your point of view.. It’s just funny that you’re condemning Tallon for overpaying players, but supporting Doug Wilson, when Doug Wilson overpays his players possibly more than any other GM in the league.

Not to mention, your whole argument is based on Dave Tallon messing up the QO’s. But most think he didn’t even mess them up! There’s a good chance he wasn’t even at fault for that!

But, you don’t care about those minor details… Tallon is bad. Pavelski is the only contract worth comparing Versteeg’s too… Doug Wilson is doing great… There’s no way Heatley or Sharp will be sharks unless there is a 3way trade… it’s impossible, at least until Doug wilson trades for one of them in a two way trade… at which point it will then once again have been possible… I can’t wait until all these things that you guys are saying “just can’t happen” actually happen. Which would, then, prove, that they can happen, right???

A quick comment on Doug Murray.

You won’t find a better analysis of Doug Murray anywhere. This is the god honest truth.

Doug Murray is an AHL defenseman with NHL muscles.

If you want me to get more specific, Douglass Murray is a low pairing, AHL defenseman, with premier, all-star, NHL muscles. Everything else about his game besides his hits (and average positioning) are at a low AHL level. His skating, speed, hockey sense, hockey smarts, passing, puckhandling, on-ice vision, shot, they’re all at a fringe AHL player’s level. His positioning is at a passable NHL level, and his hitting is incredible, at a very high NHL level. That’s the most honest, accurate analysis of his abilities you will get. In other words, he hurts the Sharks in every other area of the game, but does not really hurt them or help them with his positioning, and if you’re one who believes hits can help a team, then his hits really help the Sharks. So he helps with his hits, does not hurt or help with his positioning, and hurts the Sharks with his poor passing, poor hockey sense, poor shot, poor skating, poor speed, and poor puckhandling ability.

So he helps in one area, the one that doesn’t even help create goals or keep the other team from scoring goals (i.e the only area that has nothing to do with the two primary objectives of hockey), and he hurts them in 10 areas, 10 areas which actually do have to do with the two primary objectives of hockey.

I know fans who don’t actually think about the game like this just love his hits and think therefore he’s a good player. But when you actually analyze what he brings, it is very clear that he hurts the Sharks much more, and in many more ways, than he helps them, especially at his salary cap hit. Which, if you want to talk overpaid… if you would have asked the average Sharks fan how much money Doug Murray deserved before signing his new contract, you would have been told somewhere between 600k and 1mil.

    Not $2,500,000.

I’m vomiting again just thinking about it.

That contract along should be enough to fire Doug Wilson. Talk about wasting cap space.

  5. Mike says:

    Josh,

Your analysis of Murray doesn’t stand up to scrutiny, or else we’d see a host of lumbering, muscle bound “low-pairing AHL defensemen” in the league. I’m sure other players can find a gym, right?

If you’d like to bash a player, you’re going to need some evidence other than what your ‘gut’ tells you. I’m afraid I’m going to have to value the opinion of an NHL organization above yours. Even if it’s an organization I’m admittedly in the tank for (bad pun, I’m sorry).

Here’s some data about Murray: This past year, he was second among D in terms of EVGA/60 (that’s even strength goals allowed per 60 minutes of ice time). Only Blake was better. In 07-08, he was the best on the team. I’m not trying to make Murray out to be Robin Regehr here. But he’s an NHL-caliber defensive defenseman, and the stats support that.

As for Michalek, I can’t say I’m a huge fan of his. And I’m certainly not a fan of his contract. But you’re presenting your impressions of Sharp and Michalek as data. They aren’t. Considering how interested you seem to be in pumping up Blackhawks players (and management), I can only assume you’re a Chicago fan. We all have our biases, no?
