post Reading the Tea Leaves

The San Jose Sharks released information for their annual State of the Sharks event, where fans get to ask questions of Doug Wilson, Todd McLellan, and Team President, Greg Jamison. We went to this event last year and it was incredibly painful, mostly because of the abundance of lame questions from the fans who made their way to the mic. Their insightfulness included musing on the 49ers in the 80s, someone complaining about the water temp. in the bathrooms and a personal invitation for Cheech to visit them in Gilroy.

God help us all.

This year, the team is trotting out three players to sit on the panel to endure the torture – Joe Thornton, Joe Pavelski and Dan Boyle to join team captain, Patrick…oh…sorry. Looks like Captain Patty gets a pass on this one…

Huh?

Shouldn’t the captain be on the podium to hear the frustration of the fans and take accountability for their collective failures? We know Marleau won’t have anything “quote worthy” to say in response, but he should be there, as the face of the franchise and team captain, right?

So, if we’re looking to read tea leaves and glimpse into the mind of Doug Wilson – is this an unspoken hint?

    Then again, he’s got a 2 month old kid…

  2. Ivan M says:

Boyle also has a baby at home.

Someone should get up there and actually ask that question – where is the Captain?

My guess is that Marleau will be shopped more than anybody. Not because he sucks (he doesn’t), but because he has value and because everyone is expecting changes.

DW also might have already spoke to Patty and Patty himself asked for a trade.

  3. Brian Boitano says:

    Yes.

If I’m not mistaken, last year’s event was later in the summer… at least, I don’t recall that the playoffs were still going on when we were in the Tank listening to the crazy homeless people asking questions. What is the strategy of having it earlier, if there is any?

I’m sure most of the tough decisions are still to be made, so what is the point of this event if not to just let the fans vent?

  4. Ivan M says:

Last year’s event was on May 20, about the same time after we got knocked out of the playoffs (I think RW was just fired, and SCF was about to begin).

Personally, I’m not expecting much, but since we get zero press coverage or any developments on what’s happening in DW’s mind, I’ll be there early and upclose, even if it means few more weeks of depression.

  5. Just thought I’d pass on a little update to you dudes…

    Per David Pollak’s Blog:

“****UPDATE: Just got word from the Sharks that Patrick Marleau has been added to the list of players who will be there Thursday night.”

I see somebody already posted that Marleau will be at the state of the sharks. Anybody going to demand that Grier and Blake be there? They both wore A’s and should answer for their failure. I wouldn’t want to be hypocritical or anything. 🙂

In other news, the Baby Sharks have overcome a 2-0 series deficit to tie it at 2-2 and as of writing this they’re tied 1-1 in game 5 in the 2nd period. I like their tenacity.

Oh good Lord, last year was so painful. Can’t they weed out the crazies this time around?! Also if anyone is going and planning to ask a question- PLEASE don’t ask a question that has already been asked. I don’t know how many times these “fans” kept asking “What do you plan to do differently than this past season?” Ugh…

I guess since Patty will be on the panel now, we should expect him on the roster next season…..?

  8. Ivan M says:

I don’t understand the absence of Sharkie on the panel. The lack of intensity, heart and effort from the mascot was obvious to anyone who attended a home game in playoffs. I’m sure Sharkie will be in the building, but I’d sit him right on the panel to answer to the angry fans.

So what came out of last night?
