If Marleau refused to waive his NTC it is not comparable to what Heatley has done.

Let’s assume the very best situation for Heatley, that he quietly asked to be traded and the Senators are the ones that blew things out into the open. Heatley is still the initiator of the situation, changing his mind about staying with the team he signed with. This isn’t a Cheechoo situation, Heatley wasn’t playing on the 3rd line for 10 minutes a game, he skated maybe 45 seconds less per game this year than last year and got dropped to the 2nd line of the power play? He’s still getting minutes on the power play and they indulged his leadership fantasy by giving him an A. Does anybody seriously think Heatley Should be captain over Alfie? So, fine, he requests a trade and the Sens find one for him, and he says no… twice, because he didn’t have enough options.

Marleau meanwhile signed a contract with the Sharks with a NTC that he earned, stayed through a lot of crap for a bad season and still wants to be here. What is wrong with exercising your right to stay with the team?

So, I appreciate your devil’s advocate attempt to make life more interesting on the podcast in this last painful month before stuff happens again, but it’s not even remotely similar.

The only way I can get these two situations into the same ballpark, is if the hypothetical for Heatley also includes his desired destinations in his original request (this, if I remember correctly, also leaked, but after the trade request itself). Something to the effect of “I’d like you to see if you could move me to an original 6 team, or the west coast.” IF that was the case, then the Sens were putting him in a position to look bad by even talking to EDM.
With Patty, he’s put himself in an awkward position with the whole “Whatever it takes to make the team better” statement. The Sharks could, similarly to the Sens, put him in a bad spot by essentially saying “The team will be better without you. Now waive your clause.”

  3. Tomi says:

I’m also in the “Save Ehrhoff” camp. I’m not sure if it was argued in the email you dudes got, but Error was the best defenseman on the PP last season, if you look at the behindthenet stats. Not just better than Vlasic, but significantly better than Boyle and Blake in terms of goals per 60 mins and 1st assists. He also has consistently been better than Vlasic in the playoffs, not just last season. Yea he makes a lot of boneheaded moves but I agree with the mailer in that I think he’s an asset!

wow… anybody read Pollack’s comments on the Kessel rumors?

    http://blogs.mercurynews.com/sharks/2009/08/31/mitchell-three-years-and-staubitz-one-year-get-their-new-contracts-a-new-twist-on-that-vancouver-deal-and-that-kessel-buzz/#more-1883

What a bad idea… If DW was willing to part with a 1st and 2nd to get Kessel on an offer sheet, (who wouldn’t be available until Nov or Dec…. Yikes) why not just trade a player like Michalek and that first to Ottawa for Heatley…?? If you’re picking up a top six forward don’t you have to get rid of at least one anyways?? Are we gonna have 8 top six forwards then?

I would have to assume that this rumor is simply that, a rumor…

Dudes give us your thoughts on this?

  5. Evilducks says:

We should have been able to get Mitchell at 1mil. He missed the entire season, while I think this will probably pan out for us as a good deal, it should have been a better deal.

I hated the trade, I was disappointed by this contract and I guess Staubitz at 500k is acceptable.

So, now with a full roster we’re going to have about 1 to 2 mil in cap space depending on who makes the cut at camp and how many scratches we bring up. Is DW looking to get Kessel or Heatley or somebody we’re not really aware of?

Do we add a decent 3rd line player like Malhotra?

Do we just go with what we have and wait for Ottawa to break and steal Heatley for garbage come November? Speaking of Heatley, did you see the Red vs. White game with the Thornton, Marleau, Heatley line and if so, what did you think?

Most importantly, are the Dudes happy we finally have real Sharks news to talk about?
