post DOH 120 – Zero Points At Home

The Dudes try not to pull the hair trigger as the Sharks lose again at home, this time to Carolina.  The Dudes talk about what seems to be ailing most- the defense and goaltending.  But as always, there’s room for levity, and your emails.

I don’t understand why Murray is being used on the Power Play at all. He has a pretty hard and low shot but I just feel like Vlasic could do better on that second unit with Demers. He’s more mobile and had a reasonable amount of success playing on the Power Play back in ’08-’09, so why not go back to him?

  2. Erik says:

I am not pleased with the start either, but I don’t think there is any need to worry at this point. You guys predicted that the Sharks would blow coming out of the gates due to the euro-trip and lack of games. Well now your prediction has come to fruitition and I think it is very valid. Having said that, yes the defense worries me. I like what I am seeing in Coutore though.

Ottawa’s Murray is looking to deal, not that he likes Wilson much after Heatley, but Kuba or Phillips might make interesting targets.

Dudes…. Totally agree with most of what you said about the Sharks. Not really worried about them and some adversity now isn’t a bad thing.

I think I might disagree about Vlassic.. But mainly I’m just not ready to talk about trades until at least ten games, because I think our current troubles can be attributed to the Europe trip as much as one other thing.

And… I think the Sharks loaned out their particles to the Giants… 5 more wins and we get them back. Also Joe Pavelski and Buster Posey are both separated sons born of captain America seed… Go Giants – Go Sharks!

    let’s find that mo’.

    Hmm..

    Name, GAA, W, L, SV%
    A. Niittymaki: 1.99, 2, 0, .923
    A. Niemi: 3.71, 1, 2, .879

I know its just 5 games in, but my question is this:
Should the sharks have kept Greiss + Niitty and instead of getting another goalie from the blackhawks, gotten something on the blueline for ~2.5M?

    • Tom says:

I think that’s what DW originally intended to do. That seemed the plan based on what DW tried to do and his previous comments after he signed Niitymaki.

Honestly, right now I think were running on plan B or C. I don’t think Niemi was ever part of the plan. He was available and we couldn’t sign a D so DW pulled the trigger.

But I do think Nitty is better and his numbers will prove that.

The only thing that keeps me from totally thinking it’s a bad move is that Neimi can get hot and our window to win a cup might not have space to allow Thomas Greiss to raise his game.

You guys need to lessen the hate on Pickles. Just because he is a good skater does not mean that he is going to be, or needs to be, an offensive defenseman. Vlasic is a defensive defenseman that needs to be paired with someone who has offensive flair. He has not had a good start. Wow, calm down. He matches up great against shifty, speed oriented forwards. Maybe I am misremembering the Chicago series, but I thought he basically shut down Kane. He is not the muscle, but other than the super-elite defenseman, how many defenseman can defend power forwards and the shifty guys? How many other players do we have that defend the Datsyuks and Kanes? One, Boyle. If you want to say that he is over paid, fine. Him and everyone else on our blue line.

    • Patrick says:

Agreed. And he’s still really young. There are a few defensemen the Sharks have traded that I certainly wouldn’t mind having back (Erhoff, Gorges, Carle). I know they got assets back in those trades, but still, as fans nobody was sad to see those guys go, and yet after leaving they’ve exceeded the expectations we had for them at the time.

Also funny that the post right before this is titled “Patience.” Our defense has been abominable all over the place. Vlasic is not the problem so far.
