post DOH 129 – Happy New Year, Sharks Lose

January 5th, 2011, 8:18 am

Filed under: podcast — Written by Mike

Mike and Doug are back from their NYC vacation, and there’s much news to talk about.  The Sharks have been up and down, per usual, but put in a good effort against the best team in the West, the Canucks.  It wasn’t enough to win, but the Dudes try and figure out what the main difference is between them and us.  Hint:  the same thing that’s been talked about all year.

Petrecki has made huge strides compared to last season, hes almost a completely different player. He plays every night and well is great hes one of the few bright spots in the wooostah lineup.

According to TFP… Dave Bolland is being shopped by Chicago. (http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/chi101231.html)

Bolland is at 3.38m (x4 years) – Anybody think Chicago is serious and/or would trade with us?? Bolland could be exaclty the type of jam-filled-doughnut we could use to energize this team. Given our defensive issues at forward, a guy like this would be great. I know DW loves him…

    • Mike says:

If we didn’t need a D so badly, I would be salivating right now. I would gladly spend that kind of coin on Bolland, but if it means we eliminate all available cap space to get a D at the deadline, I reluctantly say no thanks.

      • Tom says:

Does it change your mind after considering the possible defensive upside of such a good shutdown forward like Bolland? I feel that his ability to shut down top players could make all the difference defensively.

        Just a thought…

        • Adam says:

Bolland obviously has some defensive chops. But he would hardly have the same defensive support, especially from the back end, in SJ as he did in Chicago to do the shutting down he’d be expected to do. Much in the same way people were skeptical of bringing over Niemi, I guess. Seems like with the cap, the premium is on complete players — scorers that can defend responsibly if not exceptionally when needed. Defencemen that are more than positionally sound and can chip the puck out — the ability to skate it out and contribute offensively, etc.

Plus, the only real line-matching SJ has consistently done in the past 3 years has been the so-called “power v power” match-ups.

Eklund is reporting the canes are dying to give us Pitkanen, their #1 dman, but only if they are allowed to give us Gleason, their #2, as well.

That greedy motherfucker Jim Rutherford. Someone needs to take a stand against this guy. NO!!!
‘if you let us change your main character from a duck to a chicken, we’ll really get behind your show.’
‘So everyone just gets to stick their fingers in my show, is that it? Well no deal!’
‘You know what, I really admire your passion. Fine, we’ll do it your way.’
    ‘No!’

‘We’ll trade you Pitkanen and Gleason, but you have to give us Couture, Setoguchi, Demers, and Max Gaede.’
‘So you just get to take our four best young players, is that it? Well no deal!’
‘You know what, I really admire how you always seem to get really lucky with blockbuster deals where teams give you a top player for your junk and 1st round pick, so I’m going to give to you, the only person I am negotiating with inexplicably, my two best defenseman, who everyone else wants, but who know one else knows are available, and I’m going to give them to you for free. Just don’t tell anyone else before the deal gets done or else the other GM’s will call me, and I don’t wanna talk to them. They’re mean to me! I feel like they’re using me… like they only call because they like, want something from me. No one cares what I want… except you, Doug. You always listen. Oh god I’m such a mess. I’m glad you’re here, Doug. Is it okay that I said that?! I said that to Joni and Tim, and now they’re on the trading block. It wasn’t my idea. You do the math. But, Doug, we’ll do it your way. You can have them for free.’
    ‘No!’

If you’re confused it’s because you haven’t seen the television episode I am referencing.

Sorry for the repost but I left out the little gem about the Sharks talent pool. See if you can spot the difference in the two posts.

Wait no the joke was there to begin with, just in the line below. You guys really need to include a delete button.

    Re: Bolland

I’m surprised to see the love for Bolland when you guys usually downplay opposing players’ talents. In other words, you’re actually being too generous. I have to wonder if the reason CHI didn’t trade Bolland over the offseason instead of Big Byfuglien is that they couldn’t find a taker. At 3.75 mil he’s being paid like a 2nd line center. He’s still young and could grow into that, but right now he’s an overpriced, although excellent, third line center. But he’s still a third line center. The point is, if you spent smart in free agency, or target the right people via trade, you can get so much more for that coin. I mean look at Pitkanen. I know it’s apples and oranges (forward vs D), but Pitkanen is developing into a 1B/2A dman, which is equivalent to maybe the 3rd forward on the top line of a good team, and in free agency he’ll probably get signed for 4-4.5 mil in cap hit. In the same ballpark as Bolland, but you’re getting so much more.

An example of someone who already signed, Matt Cullen is making 3 mil per year, and he’s just one of those guys, great skater, great hands, so smooth, good hockey sense, good awareness. He doesn’t have size or an elite shot, but if he did he’d be making 6 million. This is someone who can definitely center a top line and produce, and produce on the powerplay. He kind quarterbacks it from the point sometimes in Minnesota. As a second line center, he just brings a lot to the table, and for only 3 mil. Would you want Bolland at 3.75, and at a longer term that’s harder to get out of, or Cullen for 3 mil at 3 years?

Not to mention the argument that Bolland would have nowhere to play. We have Thornton, Marleau, Pavs, and Couture, all centers. Even if Marleau plays wing, then Bolland is still the 4th line center, and Mitchell has to play wing too.

I don’t think it’s a good idea personally. I think we’d be helping Chicago way more than we’d be helping ourselves. That team’s #5 and #6 dmen are killing them right now. You’d have to think they’d shore those holes up if they got the cap relief, maybe even add a forward with size. Once that happens, you’re getting awfully close to the team that beat the Sharks last year. They’ll never replace Byfuglien, but you have to remember the Hawks beat the Sharks four times in the regular season without Byfuglien playing a big role on the top line like he did in the playoffs. They shore up that 5/6, maybe Beach improves to the point where he’s mostly NHL ready by the playoffs, and they maybe add one more forward with size… Jack Skille is a pretty skilled guy. He flies around like a little guy but he’s round 215 pounds. Bickell as well might actually be more of an offensive threat than Ladd was last season. I have no confidence in their GM to make the necessary moves to improve them because Stan Bowman seems like a clueless idiot – who the hell trades the most unique package of size and skill, on a 3 mil cap hit, and doesn’t get any NHL ready young stars in return? But if he does make the necessary moves, Chicago could be scary again. I just don’t think we should help him with that. Just my opinion. Let’s hope the Sharks bring it tonight vs the Ducks. Shouldn’t be a hard game since Getzlaf’s out and I have no idea how Visnovsky plans to defend Thornton or Clowe on the boards, but you never know. Go Sharks!
