Not great news about the PK.. I guess I’ll just start adding zoloft in my morning captain crunch!

The one good thing I realized this week is that with 5 days off the Sharks should have one or two good practices before the final stretch of games. I’m sure the coaches are going to be doing their best to polish up that terd of a PK…!

  2. Ruben says:

Isn’t the big worry about all the starts Niemi is getting is that he will burn out in the playoffs, not that we have to give Nitty a chance to shake off rust? In other words, isn’t it better to be the 4 or 5 seed with a rested but sharp goalie rather than the 2 or 3 seed with a goalie that has played more hockey than he likely ever has in his life?

Man, not even the Dudes believe me when I make the argument that Dany Heatley is a good PKer 🙁 He has had some help with QUALCOMP, but guy has been far and away the best 4v5.

Chemistry… are we even talking about the Giant’s chemistry without the Padres’s epic collapse? Without Cody Ross’s best hitting stretch of his career? I guess I’ve outed what side of the chemistry debate I come out on… for every story of teams with great chemistry, there are teams like the ’85 Mets who had virtually no chemistry and yet took it all. I would bet chemistry has as much value as assistent coaches have on success.

    • Tom says:

Maybe this isnt the best place to debate baseball… but I fail to see how the Padres collapsed? The Giants outplayed them down the stretch and they would have had to sweep SF in the final three games just to have a shot at the playoffs… If SF had not won that last game, THAT would have been the collapse. Expectations aside, The Giants earned that division title.

And as per the chemistry intangible… I beleive in chemistry, But I always though having the best complete pitching staff in baseball is what propelled the Giants to the Championships not some intangible…

But, I think experience and desperation is what might end up compelling this Sharks squad this year more than anything. They play thier best when they are desperate and I think this core of players is finally getting the fact that no body is gonna hand a cup to them, they are gonna have to go get it, and that window is closing.

We’ve seen it with the late heroics by the Sharks lately… I think maturity and experience in those kind of situations is finally paying off for this team?

      • Ruben says:

Yeah, I certianly didn’t mean to say that the Giant’s didn’t deserve to win the division, and re-reading my post certainly suggests that. I just remember that there was a point that the Giants were 6 or 7 games out, and then the Padres lost something like 10 straight games in August and went 12-16 in September. The fact remains that the Giants went 21-10 on the back of near historic pitching and it carried through the playoffs. I guess my point more was that I agree with Mike that chemistry is a story told after the season.

I am pinning my reason for hope on the Sharks this year to depth and variance of skill sets. The team has a broad range of players which means no one scheme is effective against everyone. But I have certainly enjoyed the gumption shown by the team lately.

Are we even talking about the Giant’s chemistry without the Padres’s epic collapse?… probably, as the Giants would still have been in the Playoffs as the wildcard 🙂

I’m somewhere in between on the Chemistry issue… I can’t see anything tangible in Baseball chemistry. By & large, its a game of pitcher v batter & teamwork is mainly limited to set piece defensive situations. However, I think it can be far more of a tangible in hockey with 6 players on the ice together. e.g. When players just click with each other & know where to pass to etc.

Or to take the negative situation where 1 player upsets everyone. In baseball, they will still go about their game regardless & the other players will & the team can get it done. In hockey, once players start refusing to pass to each other on the ice, it will get ugly quick. (Think the examples given for each sport of the ’86 Mets / Sean Avery in Dallas).

    • Mike says:

I think your comment asks the question – which constitutes burnout more? A consecutive playing streak (37 for Niemi if he starts every game from here on) or just GP? 61 would have tied Niemi for 13th overall last year in GP.

Not to take the wussy way out, but I think it’s a combination. Playing 31 games in a row is a lot, but I think I’d rather have Niemi play 31 in a row than 77 in a season like Brodeur did last year.

And I think I need to revisit the individual PK numbers, I’m against trusting anecodotal evidence (Heatley LOOKS like a bad PKer) over statistical evidence- thanks for pointing this out.

      • Tom says:

I am a little concerned about Niemi’s workload, but only a little. I think we’ve seen it go bad with Nabby a couple times as he got overworked in the PO’s. I tend to think that concern is a little overblown because of Nabby. There is a big difference between a 37 yr old Nabokov and a 28 yr old Niemi… I do remember Drew Rememda mentioning that he was impressed with Niemi’s conditioning, so i’m not too concerned about his workload.

I am more concerned about if Nitty is even ready to get in a game and be effective if Niemi got hurt… I’d like to see him get a start or two for that reason alone.

      • Ruben says:

True true, Mike. And 31 GP is not nearly as bad over 90 calendar days than over something like 60 days. The Sharks have had a light schedule recently, which Im sure factors into the decision to go back to Nemo.

That is a good point about age as well, Tom. I certainly hope I’m wrong about worrying about these starts, and more importantly, I wish the coaches would take a more active role in deciding if Nemo sits. As with Nabby, it seems the coaches are very differential with the goaltending.

        • Cyoor says:

If Niemi will start every game from now and untill the sharks have won the stanley cup, it wont be just 31 games in a row, but rather 61 games in a row. (6 games left + around 24 playoff games).

Would we want him to break at that game 61?
