post DOH 298 – Trade Deadline Show: Expected and Unexpected

The Sharks did not sit pat at the trade deadline, and traded some players that many expected- Kennedy, Sheppard, and Desjardins.  But many also expected Antti Niemi and possible Scott Hannan moved as well, which did not happen.  The Dudes break down the trade deadline, the pop the Sharks got afterward, and their seeming regression back to where they were in February.

you’re not a bad fan for feeling the sharks are better off missing the playoffs. those rah-rah “root for my team through thick and thin” fans are clueless as to how sports work.

  2. Kent Bunn says:

One other view of DW’s comment about never asking them to waive:

He just put it entirely in their court, in front of everyone. If the fans start to think that the team would be better off without Patrick or Jumbo, now it’s not on the GM (as much at least) anymore. Now if we’re stuck with them, it’s all on them. And if they aren’t delivering, they can start losing their shine in front of the home town crowd, and eventually if they are feeling heat from the fans, they’ll ask for a path out.

Why ask the players to waive, when you can just force them to want it themselves instead?

  3. Sven says:

I agree with you guys on the draft pick. We are currently in the 11 spot. I’m hoping to get to somewhere between 7-10… I must be a bad fan for counting on a top 10 pick. I think Phil Kessel wouls be a bas pick up as well, but I did feel trying to get Kane was a great move. Young stud with huge potential needing a change of scenery. Hopefully DW goes after some guys like that. Hell even if he can get some younger power forwards with a little snarl to thier game like a Lucic or Simmonds. 70 points a season 30-35 goals not just rock em sock em types. As far as Joe and Patty go we all have thoughts… What if they just want to move Joe but keep Patty around like the Coyotes with Doan? It seems DW is trying to fanagle some leverage with one or both of them.

  4. Cyoor says:

Regarding the low chance of pics that you talked about.. The NHL changed the system this season to something that benefits the one ending up last less. The sharks are 6 points away from being bottom 7 in the draft. That means having a 6.5% chance of getting the first pick. That is about a third of the chance that ending up last would give (20% chance)
If those 6.5% wont bring the luck, then I think that a 7th pick would be quite good as well. Ending up lower than 7th from the bottom is quite unrealistic though.

Regarding the playoff chances, I just checked all games left for all the teams on the edge of playoff for the western conf. I predict the following after checking the games (Excluding the sharks):
    Vancouver – Safe
    Calgary – Safe
    LA – Fighting for WC
    Minnesota – Fighting for WC
    Winnipeg – Probably out
    Colorado – Probably out

The sharks have a quite ok chance to get in IF they win their important AND easy games.

The games they should be able to win and need to win are the following:
    1/2 against Pitsburgh
    1 against Winnepeg
    1 against Toronto
1 against either Ottawa or Detroit
    1 against Philadelphia
    1 against Colorado
    2 against Arizona
    1 against Edmonton
    1 against Kings

That would give them 92 points and at the same time not give any points to the competing teams in the games against them. This MIGHT work.

Around 92 will be the cut off I beleve. (If the sharks mannage to win their games)

    • Ian says:

Interesting odds but I think the cutoff is going to be closer to 95 or 96 pts though.

      • Cyoor says:

I estimated the cutoff on that the sharks would win all of the games above, and that would lead to a possibly quite even race in the end = low cutoff.

Also I based it on that the sharks would win against all of the other competitors in there, so I guess that if they lose to any of them or I am wrong about any of the predictions I made, the cutoff will probably be higher. A large number of 3 point games could also change it a bit.

So far my predictions has been right for all of the 5 games except that I thought that the ducks would win against Vancouver. That does not change much for the cutoff though. 🙂

      • Ruben says:

Generally I agree, but with Calgary out Giordano and Winnipeg out Buff, I think it will be close. I actually think Calgary will slide out of the playoffs, they aren’t a great team as it is. Minnesota is very good (not because of Dubnyk, though he has helped) that is a good sleeper team.

Dream/Nightmare scenario… Sharks vs. Kings, last day of season, winner goes to playoffs. What are you rooting for? Another choke job in the clutch but perhaps better draft position, or a chance to end LA’s title defense before the playoffs even begin????

  5. Tom says:

Not to beat a dead horse, but I’m fully rooting for the Sharks to lose the next 15 straight. Im just convinced it’s the best thing for this org in the long and short term.

Best case would be we are clearly out of a PO spot and we get to beat LA the last game of the season – to end their season.

    Bring on the offseason.

    • Cyoor says:

      Haha.. I totally agree! 🙂

My previous post was more about replaying to what the dudes said about the playoff chances. I still agree with you that it would be best if they just lost them all.

    • Kent Bunn says:

I’ll be at the game on the 11th, and I’m optimistic that it will be meaningful for at least one of the teams.

  6. Antivenin says:

    Tom, that’s a total dick move… I like it!

  7. TexasSharksFan says:

Ok, I’m all for the Sharks not making the playoffs. We do not have the ability to go anywhere.

Here’s my question: what are y’all’s thoughts on the goalie situation. With Nemo’s contract running out, what should we do? I’ve heard talk of trying to pick up Bernier and Neuvirth. I haven’t looked at all the contracts that are ending this season yet, so not completely filled in on the options.

  8. Matthew says:

The Sharks are playing a little better this month. But mostly the difference has been goaltending. Two shutouts against good teams in 2 weeks. If Niemi and Stalock played this well all year, the team would be higher in the standings. Last night the Sharks looked pretty bad against the Preds for much of the game. Niemi stole one for us. Wonder if the trade talk distracted him, or if he is now more motivated because no teams wanted him at the deadline and he’s playing for a UFA contract. While he’s been great in March, it’s still a questionable coaching decision to bench Stalock for several games after a shutout against the top team in the East. One last thought. I’m a big Marleau fan, but he looks like a liability right now. The dudes are right that DW has generally known when to cut bait with a veteran before they drop off, but he made a poor call resigning Patty. Thanks for the insights and humor, dudes. Always a pleasure to tune in.

  9. Kent Bunn says:

So apparently Wilson or his staff has been listening to the podcast. At Ice Insights last night, I brought up how he used Kennedy and Shep to turn high round picks into low round picks. And he was ready to pounce when I did. Granted, he didn’t directly address those players and how he felt about downshifting the picks, but he did run through the last couple years of trades to show that generally he has gotten pretty good value for what he’s shipped.

There’s not a doubt in my mind that he had heard at least a synopsis of the criticism expressed here tho.

  10. Tom says:

Things just went nuclear in SJ…LOL

Please Dudes, give us another podcast soon!! I must be entertained!

    • James says:

Collective media bomb for the Sharks today … the Merc article, Kurz’s follow up, Ratto chiming in, even Puck Daddy’s Wysh list took a shot at DW for “doing nothing” each summer.

IMO, both Jumbo and DW come out looking bad from this feud. Jumbo is supposed to display leadership qualities, and he overreacts like this. DW didn’t say anything that bad. How on Earth was Jumbo the captain? And how do you keep an A on him now?

And DW looks bad because, well, this guy was his captain! And, he signed him to a 3-year NTC. And he’s still wearing an A. Poor judgement.

I actually felt bad for TMac, who sounded a little pathetic, trying to ignore the question about the feud by steering attention towards the team’s playoff push. This distraction is not what he needs right now. But that seems like the DW, TMac style: ignore the problem, “nothing to see here,” move along, etc. They can’t play that game anymore.
