The big news in the recent past is Todd McLellan leaving the team, and the Dudes talk about whether he quit, was fired, or both.  Also on the docket – the Hasso Plattner letter, the announcement about the arena, the draft pick lottery, and first round playoff results.

I have a wierd theory that maybe the reason DW is back is because Hasso went well we’re in a bit of a mess right now better to keep the known resource instead of an outside source who could make it an even bigger mess.

As far as coaches go my guess is either Bylsma or Blashill get the job. I would love to see Tippett though.

I’m kind of expecting DW to be working the phones on trades this offseason and at the draft. I could also see him trying to throw offer sheets at Dougie Hamilton and Jon Huberdeau.

  2. Tyler says:

Thinking Babcock goes to the Bruins. His son is starting college in Boston and Babcock has praised the roster as s cup contender. Bruins cod make him Director of Hockey Operations and Head Coach. Give him say in who the GM is. Then TMac to the Red Wings. Sharks get Bylsma who is dead wrong.

The Sharks should force out Jumbo Ego for a pick and young player now, then fire DW. His rebuild is a bust. These young ayers are skilled but soft. Sound familiar? Hasso seems involved yet ignorant. Giving Jumbo a get of a jail free card is a bad move. No one should be above the team.

  3. Ruben says:

If what I hear about Bylsma is true (has really focused on analytics in his time off) I would be a fan of his hire. I’m not going to hold a 3+ game tournament with virtually no time to prepare his final roster while playing on a different ice surface against him. He did some great work with major injuries to both Crosby and Malkin and terrible goaltending. He seems to get good mileage out of depth players (Exhibit A: Tyler Kennedy).

At this point, I am looking towards 2016-17. That is the true test for DW’s rebuild. By then, we will know who Tierney/Hertl/Nieto/etc are. We will know if the goalie we got this summer is legit. We will know if Burns is Erik Karlsson-lite or just an inverse of Sammy Phalsson. It will be Jumbo and Patty’s last year and the team’s best chance to compete for a division title/Cup. I have hope… though honestly not much else.

  4. Tom says:

    Have to add this tidbit:

Elliot Freedman said on MvsW that he thought SJ was kinda dealing with the whole “inmates running the asylum” problem, when asked about Tmac leaving.

So, there might be something to DW wanting a more disciplinarian style of head coach.

My concern there is that #19 & #12 are only here two more years max. So why hire a Hitchcock or Tortorella type when this is just a temporary issue?

The more I think about this, I’m starting to think the next coach will be one that has not previously been an NHL head coach. Like Tmac was, like John Cooper… someone with a truly fresh voice that can also lead this team once out of this refresh/rebuild window.

Who that could be, I don’t know. But I think DW will do his due diligence.

  5. Ian says:

I’d like to see a guy like Shedon Keefe who coaches the Soo Greyhounds of the OHL get a look because while the Greyhounds got really stacked at the trade deadline he did a lot with much less over the total his tenure here.

  6. James says:

The question is, how much can a new coach actually fix here? DW expects the team to “bounce back” quickly. How do you do that with a weak roster, locker room problems, and roster-management feuds?

  7. Sven says:

I believe DW feels we have enough assets to make some trades to upgrade our roster. Plus he is going to try and target quality young ufa’s on teams hard up against the cap.

  8. Kent Bunn says:

First of all, STOP calling the Blues the new Sharks.
The Blues went to the playoffs for 25 years straight, w/o winning a cup.
So the Blues aren’t the new Sharks. The Sharks, and the Blues, were just the new Blues.

And I can’t imagine why TMac would ever want to go to Detroit. He wants to be his own coach, not live in the shadows of Babcock.

  9. Taylor says:

Ultimately there are 2 possible camps regarding the Sharks’ strategic options. One prioritizes making the playoffs next year. The other prioritizes winning a Stanley Cup in 4-5 years. The Red Wings’ consistent early playoff exits have proven you can’t do both simultaneously. My vote would be the latter option, but it’s clear that Plattner is in the former camp, which is obviously better for season ticket sales.

    • Tom says:

You might very well be right, but I still contend that when it comes to actually running this org or implementing ANY plan… DW is pretty much running the whole shebang… I think Plattner is a very hands off owner.

So, while I think this org is publicly claiming they intend to make the PO’s, I still doubt that is highest on DW’s plans for the next two years. There might be a little bit of “smoke and mirrors” just to placate the boss, so to speak.

  10. Chip says:

Watching the Rangers-Caps series is a reality check. NHL playoff hockey is the best action in sports! Unfortunately, the Sharks don’t have the will, chemistry, or talent right now. They look like an AHL team by comparison. So many roster holes, and please, give Pavs the C and Jumbo the boot.

  11. James says:

I miss the dudes. Wish this was a weekly podcast. But as Mike has mentioned, it’s free, so I understand.
