The Sharks have the most important draft pick they’ve had in years- the #9 pick in Friday’s draft.  The Dudes talk about the gravity of that, and the Sharks position to improve with draft picks, trades, and free agent signings.

  1. Tom says:

Several sources are reporting Coyotes GM Don Maloney has received serious offers that are “giving him pause” for the #3 overall.

And two are teams in the top 10 looking to move up.

For Noah Hanifin I’d seriously consider making an offer if DW hasn’t already. There’s no one on the team right now under 30, other than Vlassic, that is an impact player Hanafin will be. They’re comparing him to Doughty. And in another year he could have easily been a #1 overall.

I’d consider offering something like the #9, Hertl, and Braun…

Other than Vlassic, there isn’t a player I’d rather have than Hanafin in our near future.

  2. Ryan says:

Crazy trade here. AZ is clearly in a rebuild phase, especially in light of the arena debacle. They already have the 3rd pick, but you have to think they’d be open to more early round picks since no one expects them to be contenders anytime soon. So, would you trade the 9th pick to AZ for Oliver Ekman-Larsson? Would it take the 9th pick + a roster player, or would the 9th pick be enough? OEL is exactly the type of defenseman we need, and he’s young enough to have an impact for many years to come. What do you think dudes?

    • Mike says:

If the Coyotes’ arena was burning down, and they could only save one person, it’d be OEL. And it’s not close. Even if Gretzky was still affiliated with the team, they’d use him as a human shield if they had to. He’s a 23-year old defenseman that can score 20 goals, has the best Corsi Rel as a d-man against the toughest competition. The dude is a special snowflake that no team in their right mind would trade. Certainly not for the #9 pick. Or the #9 pick and whatever roster player we could offer. If I were the Coyotes GM, I would not take #9 plus any player the Sharks had to offer. #9 + Pavelski? Pass. #9 + Pavs + Burns? Still pass. Why would the Coyotes want 30-year olds, when they have a stud 23-year old, and are many pieces away from contention?

I like your thinking, and without a doubt OEL is the kind of guy you can build an entire franchise around, but by the same token, he’s the kind of guy no franchise would let leave.

      • Tom says:

Mike, I think you are 100% correct here. Which is why I think the rumor is true that they are interested in trading the #3 overall. Hanifin is essentially the same type player as OEL. And the ONE position they really don’t need. So trading down for another value player or getting a player that will help them now really makes sense for them. Otherwise they have what they just had, two PMD’s that are both top pairing guys.

I bet they trade the #3 pick. It’s just a matter of what it will cost the team who covets it.

I read that Columbus is that team most desperate. But could DW sweep in and offer Logan Couture? What about either Couture or Joe Pavelski straight up for the #3? Pavs isn’t getting younger and his value couldn’t be higher right now. Would Logan Couture be enough to take the pick alone without swapping the #9.

How much of a genius would DW be if he came out Friday with 2 picks in the top ten?

      • Ryan says:

Very fair point. And that all makes total sense from the Coyotes perspective. I guess I’m just jealous that the Sharks don’t have a special snowflake! Would the same go for trying to get Karlsson from Ottawa? They’re closer to contention than AZ, would they be willing to do like Braun + Pavelski + some pick? Add veterans to complement the young guys?

        • Mike says:

I hate to say it, but one of the few players that would be LESS likely to be traded is Erik Karlsson. 25 years old, two Norris trophies, and still improving. There isn’t another defenseman in the league more valuable. I’d take him long term over anyone.

          • Ryan says:

Why can’t the Sharks seem to draft defensemen with elite potential! Ugh. Oh well, at least we might be getting Bieksa. Oh wait, that’s a terrible idea. Damn it DW!

  3. Ruben says:

Agree with Tom and the Dudes, I really think the Sharks move up to the #3. I don’t think they give up a high end young player like Hertl AND the #9, but the #9 and next year’s Rd 2 pick?

I kinda agree with Doug regarding the Warriors… but I think Joe Pavelski is Monta Ellis. It would be an incredibly unpopular move but the absolute right move in trading a 25-30 goal scorer who has benefited from the Joe Thornton effect but whom nobody is really discounting from his value. Joe Pavelski (and say Matt Tennyson) could probably get BOTH Olii Maata and Derek Pouliot. He could get a Seth Jones AND a high pick. It gets Hertl back on Jumbo’s wing where he belongs (like trading Ellis got Klay Thompson in the starting 5). It puts Couture as the future (like trading Monta made Steph Curry the unquestioned future). But Pavs is the “leader” (just as Monta was) and leading scorer (just as Monta was) so there is no way that happens.

    • Janes says:

i agree almost entirely, except I think Monta Ellis = Pavs + Jumbo. That’s because Jumbo is still the face of the franchise, as Ellis was. You don’t turn it over to the next generation until he’s gone.

  4. Havoc says:

What would have been the best use of the Sharks 2015 1st and 2nd round picks? My vote is #3.

    1) Meier and Roy
    2) Dougie Hamilton
    3) Meir and Talbot

    • Tom says:

      I’ll go another option …

I like the trade up to get Roy. Everything I read says he easily slotted as a 1st round pick and I think undervalued.

Meier, while a good pick, isnt as good IMO as Barzal or Rantanen. Craig Button said that our scouts were high on Meier for some reason. I don’t think its a bad pick, I just think better players were available.

My theory with that… Meier was the oldest1st r pick, I bekive… I think DW wanted a player that could play immediately. We are VERY thin on the right side and DW just drafted the oldest RW with the most skill.

Thos worries me. Because it makes me think DW isn’t drafting for 2-5 years down the road. He drafting bc he thinks we can/should compete next year. Or worse he’s drafting to keep his job.

      • Tom says:

And my spelling sucks on a smart phone… sorry.

      • Russ says:

Short term thinking. Very interesting theory on why the Sharks picked an older player in the first round.

        • Ruben says:

Maybe, but considering Roy is 3-4 years away, that doesn’t seem like a win now move when that pick was the breaking point for the rumored Bieksa trade.

I think the Sharks simply like 2 way centers and big wingers. They have always felt they can fix skating problems but that you can’t teach size and willingness to play a 180 ft game. I’m hoping Meier makes the team out of camp, I do not trust our system to develop forwards. I think a 3B line of him, Smith, and Wingels would be really tough to deal with (and would push a 3A line of Hertl, Tierney, and probably Nieto/Goldobin for ice time).

          • Ian says:

I have no problem with him sitting in the Q as long as he can make the jump and avoid the Barracuda at all costs.

      • Ian says:

I was really high on Barzal as well but I don’t hate the Meier pick. I know a lot of people are saying that he is super inflated by Ehlers but I feel like its not so long ago Ehlers was inflated by Drouin. I think that once fans see how Meiers plays the game he should win them over. The age thing is an interesting angle I had not considered though so nice pick up on that Tom.

The Roy pick though is by far my favorite in the draft, he’ll need some time but it made my Saturday.

  5. Tom says:

Well I think we can all agree that it’s good DW didn’t actually give up anything of value for old man Bieksa. Good grief.

  6. Tom says:

I was just having breakfast with the wife, and told her I had a suspicion that DW had plans to go after Jones and that it might have been in the works all along…

Remember I said once that on the MvsW podcast, a former GM claimed that another GM once offered him a 3rd round pick if he went and got another player from Detroit for a 4th…. BC Det would not trade with that GM bc they were rivals. I always believed that was DW.

Everyone wondered why Bos traded for another goalie… I guess we just found out why.

A 1st and Kuraly though… Jones better be good.

    • James says:

There goes DW, trading away his first rounders again. Over his Sharks career, he’s traded a quarter of his first rounders away. Unbelievable. For Jones, was thinking a 3rd + middling prospect, or a 2nd straight up. A first and a prospect? Way too much.

      • Tyler says:

The media keep quoting how great Jones’ stats were, despite it being an incredibly small sample size on a Stanley Cup winning roster. Has everyone forgotten how Stalock’s numbers dazzled us 2 seasons go: 24 games, 1.87 GAA. Jones over 2 seasons: 29 games, 1.99 GAA. I guess DW saw something they liked to give up so much. DW waited a long time for a goalie move so I wonder if he was up against the wall and had to outbid someone else. Sweeney has taken a lot of hits for the Hamilton trade, but he got an incredible return for Lucic: 2 first rounders, plus two prospects!

      • Tom says:

You might very well be right. It’s a steep price. But I have two thoughts..

        1. DW made a decision. I was starting to think he was going to do nothing. I have a hard time preferring a GW to not swing vs. swing and miss. At least he made a move.

        2. I would love to see all the 1st round picks that DW has traded. I bet at least 80% or higher didn’t make much of a splash in the NHL.

So I guess it all matters what becomes of that pick? AND I really want to know if that pick is lottery protected.

  7. Havoc says:

Speaking of overpaid, wow Niemi is getting way too much money from the Stars.
