post DOH 308 – The Draft and Mr. Jones

The Sharks used the #9 overall pick in 2015 on Timo Meier, and while lots of big-name players moved the first day, the Sharks were not a part of it.  But they did snag a goalie, Martin Jones, from the Bruins.

Someone on HF boards dug this up:

    https://twitter.com/MrMadhawk/status/616011377170366464

Sharks rumored to be interesed in Predators goalie prospect MAgnus Hellburg… 6’5″!!

Tweeted after Sharks got Jones… Interesting. Maybe DW has no confidence in Stalock either??

    • Cyoor says:

Being from Sweden and knowing that he is writing for one of the slower and less reliable newspapers here I would not take that to seriously as he is probably not getting it first hand. The sharks might have been interested in him before, but I think that you can assume that might have changed now when the sharks traded for Martin Jones.

  2. Taylor says:

For a goalie with a .906 save percentage as a backup last year on a non-playoff team, the Sharks gave up a first-round pick, a prospect, and are paying the guy $3 mil a year for 3 years.

    • James says:

Forget the comparisons to Stalock, I hope Jones isn’t the next Ben Scrivens. As LA’s 2013-14 backup his save % was .931, with 3 shutouts and a GAA of 1.97. As Edmonton’s 2014-15 starter his save % was .890 GAA 3.16 and Talbot is replacing him.

Interesting rebuild DW… draft picks for a goalie, veteran defenceman taking up nearly $5m in CAP dollars. Going back to the “poll” on the other blog, looks like he’s in for option 1 & I’m happy even if no-one else will be that he’s looking to try & win next season!

Interesting footnote to all the talk of the draft and trading of picks over the last couple of days is that Doherty, a Sharks 2nd rounder was released – The dudes said that Jones wan’t a sure thing, but a good reminder that neither are 2nd rounders….

    • Tom says:

I think you’re right about DW’s intentions. Agree, disagree, right or wrong, its pretty clear he wants to compete next year.

I disagree btw. Not like it matters.

  4. Cyoor says:

    – “Do you want Paul Martin for 3 years 12M ??!!?”

Guess it ended up at 4 years 19.4 M
He will be 38 when the contract is over.

Great episode dudes. Chiming in to the poll / direction of the roster, I’m disappointed the Sharks are either unwilling or unable to build a cup contender. Yes, this roster could make the playoffs, but they’re nowhere near the Hawks or Ducks. And soon, we may be putting the Flames in that category as well. It will be fun to win some games, but look ahead 2 years to the end of the Jumbo and Marleau deals, a 36-37 year old Paul Martin, and as Doug said no first rounder in 2016 (currently). The Sharks should have been dealing Thotnton, Marleau and yes, Pavs, for players like Talbot, Hamilton, Hagelin, and first rounders. Painful yes, but tough choices are necessary. That said, I’m still a fan and will be rooting for the team. Go Sharks!

    • Ruben says:

For me, the West is wide open. The Kings and Hawks got a lot weaker. The Ducks will almost surely regress at least a little (they will not go 33-1-7 in one goal games again this year). The Flames got better but also overperformed, so they are still a bubble team in my view despite getting Hamilton. The Blues and Minnesota are strong but didn’t do anything to put them apart. The Jets and Stars are going to be dangerous but again not dominant.

Looking at the Sharks, I see a 100 point team in a division where that might be enough to be the leader and in a conference where no one is the playground bully. Arguably the best bottom 6 we have ever had, the best 2nd PP unit, the best set of defenseman. Martin Jones has excellent 5v5 SV% numbers, currently the best predictor of future goalie performance. Of course, small sample size caveat, but if Martin Jones had a .934 5v5 SV% over 134 games instead of 34 games, he’d be Tuuka Rask and not making $3 million.

I’m not saying this team is going to hand the Tampa Bay Lighting its lunch in the Cup finals next year. I still think 2017-2018 is the target year for DW, but I think the Sharks are going to be surprisingly good. Just the thought of a Wingels-Smith-Karlsson FOURTH line brings a tear to my eye 🙂 As if Brown-Desjardins-Burish was just a bad dream!

    • Matt says:

We have our answer to Havoc’s poll: the Sharks management would rather keep making the playoffs, early exits and all. Ward (age 34) and Martin (age 34) signed to 3 and 4-year deals for a combined $29 mil. Not a rebuild project anymore!

I like the Jones signing. It’s true, the deal was pricey and the contract is long, but that’s the kind of move the Sharks should be making. Out with Niemi, who had his shot, in with a hungry young guy. Yes, the NTC’s are hard to work around, but DW should have done the same to Jumbo and Patty.

Strange to think if the Sharks missed the playoffs in ’16 DW would be fired. But 2 years from now, when the Sharks have added another pair of early playoff exits to their resume, he’ll still have a job.

      • James says:

This roster is a bubble playoff team. Should they miss out, would be very interesting to see if DW does get fired. One never knows, but right now I think the Hawks, Ducks, Flames, Kings, Preds, and Blues are playoff teams. The Wild are a pretty good team, who have playoff expectations. If they are, that leaves 1 spot. Are the Sharks better than the Jets, new-look Oilers, and Avs? Even if they are, who really cares when a first round loss seems inevitable. Give us a future Hasso, not a mediocre present.

  6. Teddy says:

Ward: “I want to win, and give [myself] a chance to hoist the Cup. I thought that was a place that with the roster.” I must have missed something. How did the Sharks go from 12th place to Cup favorites by adding Paul Martin and an unproven goalie?

  7. Ian says:

To play devils advocate though couldn’t it be argued that the Sharks miserably under preformed last year though? I’m not saying time to plan a parade and scratch their name on the cup but I’m not sure how the Kings are a for sure playoff team with their last season and in my opinion not getting better at all this off-season being in Salary Cap limbo with a Richards appeal all but certain and the great unknown that is Voynov.

I consider myself a pretty cynical person and sure this may be a first or second round exit but I feel like they could have been in the dance last year and while there are a lot of variables at play (new coach, new goalie etc) I’m not sold that this is as much of a disaster before the puck even drops as people are making it out to be. I’m sure the rebuild is still coming, I think they just need to get Thornton and Marleau off the books first because they clearly aren’t going anywhere.

    • Ruben says:

I’ll call it now, the Kings won’t make the playoffs. Their bottom 6 is terrible. They have a bunch of distractions. Alec Martinez would be the Sharks #6 Dman, he is the Kings #3.

I really like the roster with the exception of the #6 Dman slot (Tennyson). I can’t remember the last time I was so content with the roster up and down. Ian is probably right, I don’t think the record last year was reflective of the talent on the team, they were probably more talented than Calgary and Vancouver and, unlike the Kings, got better this offseason.
