Watched the Periscope. Well done! The Norris discussion was especially interesting. I think it will be Doughty, Letang, Karlsson, but you made a good case for Burns. If/when Nieto comes back, who will sit? Could it be Tierney? He has really struggled and Zubrus looked good as the 4th line center. I think right now Spaling is better than Tierney. I also think the Sharks can beat the Kings, but only if they figure out how to win at home. Winning Game 1 would go a long way to boost the Sharks’ confidence. You left Stralman out of the missing Lightning players. I feel pretty bad for them. So many big players lost to injuries it’s hard to keep track. And they will probably lose Stamkos as a UFA. From contenders to first round exits without their best player / captain. Ouch! As for the west, beat LA! Go Sharks!

  2. Matty says:

Only takes two things to beat these Sharks: 1) Shut down Jumbo 2) Don’t give up PP goals. Doughty has owned Jumbo in the playoffs and they have the last change in 4/7. The Kings will have learned from the regular season don’t take bad penalties against SJ.

To beat the Kings you have to 1) Shut down Kopitar’s line *and* Carter’s line 2) Match the Kings’ physical play 3) Outplay their bottom 6 forwards. I don’t see the Sharks doing any of these. Kings in 6.

The wild card is Quick. As the dudes said he struggled in the regular season series. But usually the bigger the stage, the better he plays.

Sharks’ should have won the division and played the Preds, who they would have beaten. Instead, they left points on the table against non-playoff teams like the Sabres, Jets, and Canucks. No killer instinct. Sound familiar?

    • Taylor says:

PDB made 5v5 scoring a team goal as soon as he took over. Now we’ll put it to the test. If we get even strength goals from the top 6 and Burns, we’ll win. But LA is the best Corsi team in the league, so it will be tough.

  3. Havoc says:

    What happened with Hedican?

  4. Rosevelt says:

Jones is 3-0 with a .931 save % and 2.00 GAA versus Quick. I like the Sharks chances.

  5. Ruben says:

With Gaborik out, Dustin Brown is playing on the 2nd line. Donskoi-Couture-Ward have to outplay Toffoli-Carter-Brown. Similarly, Marleau’s line has to outplay Lecavalier’s. I don’t think PDB will line match but the “middle 6,” so to speak, is where our advantage has to lie. But Toffoli/Carter are really good…

Interesting thoughts on the Norris. Agree with James, will be Doughty-Letang-Karlsson with Karlsson the winner. Burns just has a bad rap defensively (mostly undeserved now, though he still isn’t great).

Vlasic again is criminally underrated. Arguably a top 5 defensive Dman, #8 in the entire NHL in points/60min for defensemen(!). Great Fenwick numbers, kills it despite rarely starting in the offensive zone and going against top lines every night. Excellent on the PK. His weakness, the PP, is arguably the least necessary still for a defenseman to be good at (as the Sharks show with 4 forwards on their PP1). He’ll never win, but that is to our benefit come contract time.

No respect from Vegas. Kings are favored over San Jose.

  7. Reggie says:

So tired of Sharks v Kings, I will skip the series. The new playoff format overemphasizes divisions. I have no desire to watch these teams play each other up to 12 times in a single season.

  8. James says:

Pavs, Ward, Hertl, Donskoi played amazing last night. Pavs now has 12 GWG this season, tops in the NHL. Both his goals were huge.

Was really impressed by how PDB handled ice time. I was worried we’d see Burns playing 26 minutes again, but he rolled his pairings as usual. Smart move that paid off in the 3rd. Early in the season, the Sharks would give up the tying goal, but since he’s adjusted ice time it seems the Sharks own the 3rd.

But what happened to Jumbo and Patty? Worst game I’ve seen them play all year. On the shorty, Jumbo makes a lazy pass that deflects off Marleau to Lewis. Then, Joe casually moseys up the ice rather than backchecks. As for Marleau, he doesn’t even bother. Burns does his drop-to-the-ice move that never works against odd-man rushes and it’s in the net. No way the Sharks go deep in the playoffs without better play from their 1st and 3rd line centers.

  9. Havoc says:

Unclear why the Sharks weren’t awarded a penalty shot on Doughty’s “save.” He clearly fell on the puck. “67.4 Penalty Shot – If a defending player, except a goalkeeper, while play is in progress, falls on the puck, holds the puck, picks up the puck, or gathers the puck into his body or hands from the ice in the goal crease area, the play shall be stopped immediately and a penalty shot shall be awarded to the non-offending team.”

  10. James says:

i think more than fell on the puck, the reply from above shows he “gathers the puck into his body.” Definitely should have been a penalty shot.

Really, the Kings didn’t play that well at all. 2 of their goals were lucky bounces, 1 resulting from a phantom call on Ward that put the Kings on the Power Play. And this should have been a penalty shot. Kings got 2-3 lucky breaks there.

    • Taylor says:

Yes, that definitely should have been a penalty shot, but the early whistle on the disallowed goal was even worse. The ref acknowledged he messed up. So that’s a goal and a penalty shot the officiating cost SJ. PDB kept his cool and his team came back. Pretty impressive all around. Hopefully we don’t see those refs again.

The next podcast had better be chock full of unicorns and rainbows. This team is for real and is proving it on the ice. New podcast tonight? Timing is perfect…
