PDB is not to blame for the goaltending issues not fixed in the off season, nor the weak roster depth. Kurz pointed out under him, the Sharks made the playoffs the last 4 straight years and only 3 other teams did so. And he gets canned. Yikes.

  2. Tom says:

I thought PDB was a second from being fired before thanksgiving. I think he was within a loss or two or that very thing.

I’ve heard many NHL personalities say that before you fire a coach it’s kinda standard to give him a trade or acquisition. I think Marleau was that move.

Right or wrong I think it’s been a long time coming. However, I do think this teams issue is still mostly a composition issue and not competition or coaching. Our goalies suck, our forward depth isn’t very good, and we lost major pieces from last year that our GM didn’t replace. His hands were and are tired in many of those situations though.

It’ll be interesting to see how they claw there way out bc I’m convinced that trading away prices for even a slight one year retool isn’t in the works because Ottawa has our first round pick. Can you imagine the flak that DW will take if that ends up being a lottery pick.

    Talk about yikes.

  3. WingsFanInSharksLand says:

How come Doug Wilson doesn’t take more heat? I see more and more Sharks fans complaining about the makeup of the team and the contracts but it seems that DW always gets a free pass. If this team misses the playoffs do you guys think he should be canned?

    • James says:

Well, he has been pretty extraordinarily successful as a GM, if you define success as regular season and postseason wins, with the notable caveat that he’s never won a cup. I certainly don’t want him fired. But he does need someone to tell him he needs a new goalie and 2-3 NHL forwards much more than a new coach.

    • Tom says:

I’ve heard very reputable NHL people say that Sharks ownership is borderline dependent on Doug Wilson to understand and help run this franchise. Where other teams have over active owners, I our team has a GM who is almost partial owner in that regard. I think he’s totally safe unless the future of this team falls apart and he start making obvious panic moves.

      • Mike says:

Sounds like a decent strategy to me- somewhat like the sales guy getting promoted to CEO. Is he going to be able to evaluate the quality of the tech coming out of the company, or defer to the VP of Engineering? Deluding yourself into thinking you’re a “hockey man” has rendered many franchises rudderless. When the overall strategy or budget does not meet ownership guidelines, that’s when DW will be in trouble. Which may be soon, as the Sharks have almost no cap flexibility, and are worse than a coin flip to even make the playoffs.

Hasso can’t say definitively that having three $7M+ no-move defensemen on the roster is a bad thing necessarily, but if the Sharks are handcuffed and suck, that’s DW’s problem, not his.

    • Teddy says:

If they keep playing like this – worst team in the West – Doug Wilson will be feeling the heat, no matter how important he is. The Sharks are paying big salaries for a very bad team.

  4. Nazir says:

The Dudes will completely disagree with this. But … I feel like DW has accepted this season is not going to be a deep playoff year. In fact, he probably knows the Sharks will not even make the playoffs. Since DW knows PDB does not like the Sharks prospects pool, he promoted BB to audition youngsters and get something out of the year. Miss the playoffs, but get a good read on the team.

Then, in the offseason, DW will hire a new permanent coach, get a goalie, and start fresh. Merkeley could be trade bait, or possibly make Burns expendable. Stinks that the Sens will get a pretty good pick, but that’s not the end of the world. If the Sharks make the playoffs, that’s a bonus. The focus will be evaluating Labanc, Ferraro, Blichfeld, Suomela, Bergman, Gregor, and maybe even True or Chemelevski.

    • Tom says:

I don’t want to be that guy that flames somebody and acts like a jerk, but…. I hate to break it to you, I don’t see Martin Jones going anywhere. He’s under a big contract and his trade value is crap. Who’s gonna take him? Unless ownership is ok with a buyout? Or there something in the works with Seattle next year??

I don’t know. Right now it’s our most glaring issue and I don’t see it getting better without DW pulling a major rabbit out his sleeve.

      • Nazir says:

If SJ had a better option to start in net, they could always put Jones on waivers. If he clears, he’s off the books and we can use that space for a better option in net. But we haven’t seen any movement by DW at the goalie position at all. Is it stubbornness?

Bottom line, this team is just not that good. When you add weak goaltending, you get the 3rd worst goal differential in the league.

I am optimistic that this summer, DW will make some big moves to find a new permanent coach and starting goalie. (For the record, I would not have fired PDB.) For now we just have to forget about the fact that our pick to the Sens is going to be waaaaay higher than we ever expected.

  5. Ted says:

Can I just say the comments section has been pretty on in predicting this season. Skepticism about the goalies, Labanc, replacing roster players from the below average prospects pool, sacrificing depth to sign EK65, all kind of on.

  6. Havoc says:

Who would have thought, a couple years after the Karlsson trade, we’d all be saying the Sens are a team headed in the right direction while the Sharks are spiraling.

  7. James says:

IMHO everyone needs to calm down about the roster. Yes, as Kurz’ recent article shows via stats, the Sharks are not great on paper. But they are only 4 wins out of a playoff spot. If they had league average goaltending, they’d have those wins and be in playoff position. Then you add a RW scorer at the deadline and suddenly you’re a dark horse to make a run. The goalie situation colors everything.

    • Taylor says:

I admire your optimism, but the team issues are widespread. Stars not playing well consistently. Depth very poor. Zero identity. Not much drive. I guess the Sharks miss the playoffs this year, leading to some big changes. I would consider dealing Burns and/or Vlasic this summer, or even at the deadline. Karlsson will never be worth that contract, but he’s someone you can build around.
