The Sharks have played some good games against good teams, but it seems like too little too late.

Here’s a question for all to consider and give some feedback…

If we end up having to give Ottawa a top 5/10 pick for compensation in the EK65 deal, does Doug Wilson get fired? Should he get fired?

If we lose that pick it’ll probably go down as the worst trade loss on his record.

Second question: If you think he will or should get fired, is there someone better to replace him?

When I ponder those questions I have to say that I don’t think there’s a better GM out there. DW isn’t perfect and he has his flaws but unless we hit lightning with some off the map GM, who is going to do a better job than we’ve seen Doug Wilson do over his tenure as GM? It’s hard to look past the current debacle we’re in, but honestly he’s been a fantastic GM.

I’m genuinely curious of everyone’s honest opinion.

I think the Sharks will give DW another full season to turn it around based on his past success. And I agree.

If the Sens pick is top 5, the EK654 deal is the worst in franchise history. But I don’t know that I blame DW. Everyone wanted EK65. For whatever reason, he’s not working out here. He is not even close to being an All-Star, let alone worth the highest Dman salary in the NHL. IMHO I’d like to see his minutes cut big time. He needs sheltered shifts and is a pp specialist.

My gut tells me, how EK65 performs next year determines whether DW keeps his job. If Karlsson turns his game around with whoever the new coach is, they’ll get back to the playoffs. If he’s playing like this, the Sharks can’t win and DW will be out.

The big question is, how much of a sledgehammer can be taken to the team due to these crazy, lengthy contracts?

Two other questions: 1) If you were the Sharks GM, would you consider trading EK65? 2) What available coach could fix this team?

      • Nazir says:

Now that Couture is injured, the Sharks have to accept that the Sens’ pick will def be top 10, maybe even top 5. Ouch!

        1. Yes, sure. But that’s a long way off. I think next year DW will make some big changes but not a teardown – new coach, goalie (Dell is auditioning for the role now but I don’t think he’s good enough), and sign someone for offense. If they miss the playoffs 2 years in a row and a new GM comes in, then the teardown happens and Karlsson would likely be open to a trade.

        2. I think Peter Laviolette was a final candidate last time around. He would be a good fit as the Sharks have evolved into a team centered around their elite Dmen, not unlike the Preds used to be. Ans also, Babcock. Would be a classic DW move to get him on the cheap while his rep is in tatters. He comes in and everyone in the room, including Babs, would have so much to prove.

        • James says:

Dell looks pretty good to me. Of course, it’s a small sample size. But I’m hopeful.

The most baffling Sharks stat is that they are 1st in penalty kill and 30th in goals against 5 on 5. Huh? Maybe they should just put 4 guys out there all the time.

love this podcast. not trying to be a critic, but can i just say, as woeful as most comments sections are, there are a lot of voices here who nailed this sharks season. especially this one. comments: i have concern pavs leaving will hurt the sharks culture? (confirmed by kurz article) dudes: the captaincy is overrated.

  3. Trex says:

I didn’t believe the Sharks were already out until Mike made his point about the record they need. Like Doug, it hit me like a ton of bricks. The Sharks are deceptively 6 points back from the Canucks. I say deceptively because Vancouver has 2 games in hand. So the Sharks could be as many as 10 back. Wow. Mike is probably right. Unless the Sharks go on a lengthy winning streak, it’s over. Especially if they deal Dillon, who is a great player and will be sorely missed.

  4. James says:

As critical as I have been of the Sharks this year, I wonder how I’d feel if Dell had been inserted into net around say, Halloween, in which case the Sharks would almost certainly be in a playoff position. Or at least right there in striking distance. Solid goaltending helps everyone’s numbers and I feel like the team is seeing Dell’s effort and responding a little. He’s their best player at the moment.
