In a surprise move, the Sharks have signed Rob Blake to a one year, 5M deal.

Wow….I’m surprised. According to the SJ Merc, this has no effect on the Sharks confirmed pursuit of Dan Boyle. With Blake, the Sharks are at 50M and still need to sign Clowe and deal with Ehrhoff and Goc. Does anyone else find this strange that all three are flappin’ in the breeze? Could they be used as trade bait? Hard to know…

According to Darren Dreger on TSN, Tampa Bay prefers to do business with San Jose and they might have a deal in place, pending Boyle’s approval. I think Tampa Bay needs defense and we have plenty to offer, but the money needs to make sense. McLaren and Carle equal 5.9M in salary and the Sharks take on Boyle at 6.7M. So this would put the Sharks at 50.8M with Ehrhoff, Clowe and Goc still on the outside looking in…you would have to think that there would be another move to follow.

Rob Blake is 39, but was still effective on a really bad team last year. I don’t hate this signing as much as it appears that other Sharks fans seem to on some message boards I’ve been reading. I think this is Part One is a roster overhaul that will involve another new face on D and a new forward. Let’s hope Boyle is Part Two.

Unfortunately it looks like Boyle will be part II. Sucks big-time for me.

  2. Nick says:

I think a lot of the bad feelings on this move are directed at the dislike we’ve gained for Blake over the years, but he is still a solid player and I think can be part of what we need. Although he is far from filling our gaps alone.

  3. Jerry says:

What do you know? Somebody woke up at West Santa Clara Street and made a signing. Is Doug Wilson turning into Brian Sabean? Last year, Wilson was hoping to squeeze the last ounce of productivity out of geriatrics Sandis Ozolinsh and Jeremy Roenick. This year, he’s going one more round with Roenick and is bringing aboard Rob Blake. Are the Sharks trying to cater more to the AARP demographic? Is that why Depends and Levitra are two of the team’s newest sponsors?

All kidding aside, I’m relieved to see the light is still on at the HP Pavilion and that someone is still working on improving this roster. Blake isn’t what he used to be, but I hope he’s still got a little left in the tank. If Wilson can also get Boyle without giving up too much, then we’re back in business.

How about Cheechoo, Goc, Vlasic and Ehrhoff for Boyle?

  4. Ian says:

I think Blake is being brought in for what he can bring to the locker room at crunch time the guy unlike Roenick has a ring and could help stabalize the team come spring. I think if this is all DW does we are screwed and even if he has played for teams previous that I absolutely hate the fact is hes in Teal now and thats all that matters to me.

  5. Nick says:

Boyle to SJ Boyle to SJ! TSN’s reporting Boyle and Lukowich for Carle, a prospect, a 1st rd, and a 4th rd. A large price, but I’d say it’s fair.

  6. Ian says:

I think they are overpaying a bit but overall I like it. In alot of reports I heard cheechoos name dangled around and would rather see carle go then cheech. When Cheech got healthy he really seemed to heat up but Carle had just been kinda disapointing from start to finish I think Carle is gonna be great eventually but the Sharks need to win now and the most recent moves confirm at least in my mind that they are definatly still moving in that direction. All and all very excited for next season.
