  • Thanks for listening to the podcast– the number of listeners for the latest episode is going up quickly.  Only we could be dumb savvy enough to start a hockey podcast after the Stanley Cup finals are over.  I guess there are more hockey-starved fans than we thought.
  • The full schedule is out today, so some quick thoughts on that.  Opening at home against the Ducks is awesome.  A home-and-home against Philly shortly after that is just odd.  I’m glad there’s no 8 or 9 game road trips this time on the east coast.  However, there’s a 5-game trip and a 4-game trip in February, which is almost as bad- the second trip is at Dallas, at Detroit, at Ottawa, and at Montreal.  Brutal.  The fact that we get Sid, AO, and the new intense rivalry with the Patrick Rissmiller-pumped Rangers at the Tank are all good things.
  • Six games against division opponents makes more sense than eight, but I’d go with five.  That way you can play every team in the NHL home and away every year, and there would be a definite division series winner every year as well.
  • The big blockbuster trade rumor with Meszaros and Gerber going to L.A., Kopitar going to Chicago, and Khabibulin and Barker/Seabrook going to Ottawa makes great sense for the Sens and Hawks.  But Kings get absolutely screwed.  Kopitar is the best young scorer in the Pacific division in my view- better than Perry, Getzlaf, and Michalek.  East coast writers may not know how good this guy is, but I do.  Getting a #3 or #4 D-man and a disappointing goalie in return is not nearly enough.  Now that I think about it, it makes perfect sense for Lombardi to make that deal.

I like the new schedual format. The eight games was nice to try and build rivalries but in my opnion other then a regional rivalry the best rivalries are built in the Playoffs The reason Rivalries Like Montreal and Boston were so great back in the 80’s was because of Divisional Playoffs… these teams hated each other cause they met in the playoffs every year. I’m not advocating for a return to divisional playoffs I just think that the 8 games was a great idea but missed the intended mark. Mike I’m right with ya 5 games would probably do more to intensify the rivalries then a 6 or 8 game set because there would be a clear winner for the season and nothing would get under my skin as a shark fan worse then having LA win a season series or the ducks. Yuck! Aside from that I’m with you I miss the home and away games vs. the other confernce although I think the best hockey is in the west the poster boys for the NHL like Crosby and Ovechkin are in the east and for a league that wants to grow their game I just don’t see how not having those stars go to every NHL city is a good deal for anyone. What is makes me crazy is the change was made for Eastern Conference teams crying because they had too many flights that lasted longer then an hour… my heart bleeds for them.

As for the rumored trade I heard a different variation of it. This is right from the rumor mill I don’t have any idea how much water it holds so take it for what its worth.

    The variation has:
    – ‘Bulin, Barker and Sharp going to Ottawa from Chicago
    – Gerber, Seabrook and either Neil or Vermet going to LA from Ottawa
    – Erik Ersberg, Tom Preissing and either Neil or Vermet then getting sent to Chicago.

I think either way its not a great deal for LA but I agree sending Kopitar away seems stupid, I wonder if they already have a Taveras jersey done up. But other then LA’s poor management somthing else that also makes these deals make sence for them from a business level is the fact that they are 11 Million(ish) Dollars below the floor. Yeah Gerber is streaky but hes a 3.7 Mil Cap hit and probably still better then anything they could put between the pipes.
