post Clowe resolution on the horizon??

As the lone holdout from last years roster waiting for a new contract, it appears Ryane Clowe’s deal could be announced in the next few days, as David Pollak’s blog hinted today. This is very good news, very good news indeed but it might be hard to speculate what the dollar amount and term will be of Clowe’s new deal. Before I had guessed that due to his injury last season, overall lack of NHL experience (only 91 regular season games and 44 points) and his recent brush with the San Jose Po-Po, Clowe might settle for a two years deal worth 3M total. But, the market has been bizarre for a player of Clowe’s stature in the RFA market.

Daniel Carcillo got 2 years, roughly 1.8M from Phoenix. He has only 75 NHL games under his belt and 31 career points. Patrick Eaves got 4.2M for three years with 168 games and 76 points. Steve Bernier got 2.5M with 177 games and 90 points. Antoine Vermette just got two years, 5.5M for 297 games and 139 points.

So what is Clowe worth in this market? Will he take less term and less dough in order to cash in later? Will he want security and will Doug Wilson pull a “Matt Carle” type of deal of overpay for the potential long term investment? I see the former happening. I’m sticking to two years and 3M, and it should be no more than 3.2M or that’s a minor slap in the face to Little Joe.

As for some of the McLaren bashing that is happening on other message boards, and I admit to being a little guilty of it at first – don’t we think that Kyle deserves a little more than being thrown out like trash to the lowest bidder? With a positive suggestion in the post below, bcsteve brings up the LA Kings could take Kyle and his 2.5M salary to make the cap requirements and Lombardi might have a passing interest since he’s the one who brought McLaren to San Jose in the first place. Good idea, and I’m sure DW would prefer to send him out of the division, but with Kyle the odd man out – he might not have a choice…and neither might the Kings.

Newest podcast episode can be found here. Let’s hope we’ll be talking about Clowe’s new deal next week as a done deal.

Looks like it’s 1.6 million from the hfboards and sjsharks forums. No word on the length of contract.

Good news, now on to finalizing the remaining spots and getting the season started.

BTW, your thoughts on Bowman to Chicago?

NHLPA.com shows his compensation at 1.6 for 08/09

  3. Ian says:

This is great news! 1.6 is a great deal for clowe and should not require any major moves cap wise. Looking forward if 1 year is the term there will be more money to sign him long term in the next off season when you consider that Blakes 5 Million will be off the books. I don’t think I have ever been more excited for a season to start then I am now.

I’m also going to step up the the plate on the McLaren bashing as well, its silly hes been a great player for us and although he may not be the player he was a year ago hes never really done us wrong he shows up he playes, hes a great locker room guy. I might be in the minority I’ll be sad too see him go although I do agree he should be the guy on the block, much like I was sad to see Rivet go.

  4. Ian says:

Blah on McLaren I ment a few years ago rather then a year.

  5. Nick says:

Great news on close. For KMc I will say that his problems have clearly been injury related and, while I’m not convinced, DW seems to think he could have a stronger year this year than he did last year.

  6. SoCalSharksGirl says:

I;m very happy to hear that Clowe has re-signed finally!!!

And regarding McLaren, I think the deal to LA would be the best option at this point, unless DW can convince on of his golfing buddies to pick him up. At least with the Kings, we could get a Draft pick or two out of it possibly. And I’ll be sad to see him go too, I just don’t think he’s going to fit in quite like he used to with the new additions to the team and his history of getting injured.

  7. Mike says:

I’m going to think outside the box and propose we trade Blake back to the Kings with McLaren for their 1st round pick :-).

  8. evilducks says:

Lucas Kaspar signed at 600k, though I suppose it could be a two way contract.

  9. Doug Wilson likes to announce signings in bunches. We should look for a joint announcement of Kaspar and Clowe on Monday.

  10. Ian says:

    Mike for GM! :-p
