post Has Puck Prospectus Gone Mad?

I’ve been bad. I went and looked at Hockeybuzz and it freaked me out.

I was bored last night trying to get to sleep and stumbled upon a three way trade rumor between San Jose/Chicago/Toronto but of course with no names attached. I always knew Eklund’s rumor ratio sucked but I never guessed he had a hilarious 3% accuracy, but thanks to the website hockeybuzzhogwash.com, they’ve been tracking his shots in the dark and found he has predicted 15 out of 472 rumors on his site correctly – that’s the 3.1%.

So, knowing this, I would discount the trade rumor on the spot – but my internet searching got the best of me and I found a twitter from Puck Prospectus as “speculation” as to who might be involved in this three-way trade. Prepare to vomit all over yourself.

To Toronto: Versteeg, Brian Campbell, Cheechoo
To Chicago: Marleau, Kaberle and Nabby
To San Jose: Jason Blake, Huet and 2010 1st round pick.

Have you picked your jaw up off the floor yet?

From a website that I usually respect and that recently teamed with Dudes on Hockey guest, E.J. Hradek, on several pieces on ESPN.com – this has got to be the biggest load of @&*. Either this guy Andrew Rothstien is deranged, has a great sense of humor…or is deranged. So, he’s actually inferring the Sharks are going to trade two expiring contracts that would allow them to have $12M in cap room next season and a struggling Rocket Richard winner for a LW who had a bounce back year with 63 points but still has cancer and is signed until 2012 and a wildly overpriced goalie in Huet that is signed until 2012 for big money and sucks HUGE in the playoffs…oh, and that 1st round pick.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA…..HAH….HA…Dear Puck Prospectus, either you owe your readers an apology or I will be my roof ready to jump if you are right.

Now, I do buy that perhaps Toronto and Chicago are good trade partners with the Sharks, especially with the RFA trouble the Hawks have gotten themselves into – but the players I see Doug Wilson being interested in from the Hawks is RW Patrick Sharp and/or RW Dustin Byfuglien. If the Hawks want to get Marleau for those two players for one year and Marleau will approve the move, I would make the deal. As for Toronto, I’ve talked before about how Kaberle could be on the Sharks radar because he could fill the legit #2 role in a “Detroit” model, skilled and responsible – not physical. Boyle and Kaberle would be our answer to Lidstrom and Rafalski. Not quite the same, but pretty darn good. Toronto needs scoring bad, bad, bad and might be willing to roll with Michalek and Cheechoo.

Gotta be a major move coming this week – just not the insanity listed above.

Also, Blake will be 36, Huet 34 when the season starts. Both will be making at least $4M per year for the next three years. DW would lose all credibility with me if we got either of those players.

  2. If you are into Eklund is an idiot posts, you may find this post that I wrote amusing. http://www.hockeyanalysis.com/?p=825

What makes no sense about that deal is the Blackhawks not only likely get the 3 best players in the deal, but are also adding significant salary, something they can’t afford to do.

Eklund full of crap? The next thing you’re going to tell me that the sky is blue? lol!!!

No, that trade would be BAD for everyone involved, and Bryan Burke would whine about how the Sharks and Hawks are not fair traders.

This is why I take every rumor with a grain of salt. Most of them are insane, and most of them can be shot down with basic common sense.

  5. Leaf in Habland says:

I don’t think Burke would whine. As a Leaf fan I would be thrilled to get Versteeg, Campbell and Cheechoo for Blake and Kaberle (and I assume that is our 2010 pick). Not going to happen though.

  6. Ruben says:

Wow, that is an awful “rumor”. Im a huge reader of the prospectus family, that has to be a misprint.

  7. Ian says:

That trade is insane, but I guess if DW was in the market to get totally ripped off its a great deal. 🙂

  8. Tom says:

Damn… Beuchemin signed with Toronto… Well at least Ana didn’t get him. Ana is looking worse and worse.

I’m getting scared that Heatley to SJ could actually happen…,

  9. Ian says:

With the Sens picking up Kovalev I think that we will have an answer to the Heatley question sooner then later.

  10. Tom says:

I know I know….I’m crazy, but I’d take heatley for Michalek, Ehrhoff, and another player like Lukowich or Shelly…

Shed space and keep Marleau. We could drop him down to the 2nd line with Seto. Put Clowe with Heatley and Joe on the top.

    I’m frigging nuts…

  11. Tom says:

How about Michalek, Ehrhoff, and Vlassic for Heatley and a pick….

Shed 10.5 M in cap and take on 7.5 M. Upgrade Michalek to Heatley and gain 3m in space.

  12. Pherr says:

I guess the NHLPA has filed a grievance today over the QO mixup. Sure wouldn’t mind seeing Versteeg in teal…

  13. Ian says:

Well they just locked up Cam Barker to a 3 Year $9.25 million dollar deal according to so it should be interesting to see if they can lock up Versteeg and stay under the cap since Versteeg is I guess one of 4 players left that could become UFA’s as a result of this blunder.

  14. Ian says:

that should be according to TSN.

  15. Evilducks says:

I think Versteeg is still young enough to have a capped salary so I don’t think it will be too much of an issue for them to keep him.

Still, if he goes unrestricted we should be all over that and quickly explain to him what the cap situation in Chicago looks like over the next year or two… (and conveniently leave our problems out).

  16. Ivan M says:

Just as you guys predicted, Gustavsson picks Toronto. Oh well – he’ll either become an NHL all star there or local media and fans will break him and he’ll quickly retreat back to Europe to hide. Oh yes, he has to deal with RW too.

Hopefully now DW can stop sitting on his hands and make some moves. It’s July 7th.

  17. Pherr says:

Anyone else think that Kaberle is going to be a Shark now given all the trades they’ve made recently? Its well known that the leafs have a wealth of defensive weapons and Burke himself said they need to move those assets for forwards. Seems like we’ve got the guys to make the deal and I think it would be huge to get another great defense man.

  18. Brian Boitano says:

If Kaberle is the biggest of the “drastic changes” we see this off season, we are in trouble. The Monster was the key to the changes imo. Low price, either forces Nabby to watch over his shoulder or forces him out the door. Griess will not be ready next season… are we going to give Nabby a raise? The top-tier 3rd/4th line character guys are off the board… where does DW look from here?
