Some other real quick hits for you to comment on as we wait for July 1st.

A name for us all to keep an eye on is Cam McIntyre. The Sharks gave him a two year contract as a college free agent and his AHL salary according to CapGeek is $575,000 – in comparison Jason Demers’ AHL salary if he were sent down is $52,500 – which means Doug Wilson must think he’s a strong contender for a checking line position next season. I don’t know much about him other than he’s built like a mini-tank (6’1/220), which is a similar build to Ryane Clowe. I think he’s in line to compete for Jed Ortmeyer’s vacant roster spot.

Remember this name too, Andrew Desjardins, from the “Crazed Rats” line in Worcester. People in the AHL are very high on this minor league agitator and perhaps he’s ready to make the leap to the NHL. He’s caught Doug Wilson’s eye and for a guy who went undrafted and toiled in the Central Hockey League and the ECHL, he was a +29 with 46 points and 129 PIM’s and 7 fighting majors. If I were Torrey Mitchell, I wouldn’t buy a house in San Jose…this guy might take your j-o-b.

I am fine with Nic Wallin returning the Sharks because he is gold for the podcast soundbites and I don’t think we saw the best of him last season, but the contract is bizarre. If this means Huskins is gone and the Sharks add a legit #2, we’ll forget about this contract in a few weeks. But if DW signed Hamburgers to replace Blake, we will be haunted by it – I just can’t imagine that’s the case. Bye bye Huskins.

Speaking of #2 d-men, the more I think about it, the more a Devin Setoguchi to the Minnesota Wild for Brent Burns trade makes perfect sense. The Wild desperately need scoring and Seto would fit their up tempo rebuilding style and the Sharks could sure use Burns. At 6’5 and age 25, this big, smooth skating d-man is signed for two more years at a 3.55M cap hit. If DW strikes out July 1st with Michalek, Martin and Hamhuis, this could be a perfect marriage.

Thanks for the updates. Not much high end talent left in the system. Can’t really jump up and down over a McLaren versus McIntyre versus Dsjardins for 4th line spot battle.

Don’t know how they could sugar coat Huskins so that someone would actually take that salary.

Also don’t see how they’re in the high end UFA sweepstakes for any of the players mentioned now that Wilson has allocated so much money to Marleau and Wallin, and supposedly still intends to sign a vet goalie.

    • Patrick says:

As opposed to the other 29 teams, who are jumping up and down over 4th line spot battles.

  2. Doug says:

I’m just thinking out loud but could Huskins be the “Luko” or the “Cheechoo” in this offseason’s big roster trade? Doug Wilson has a history of making someone take his trash if they want one of his assets. If Minnesota wanted Seto or Mitchell, they would have to take Huskins too. Wouldn’t surprise me.

  3. Haie says:

Agreed. People are panicking but I really think an asset is being worked out for trading atm. I never saw Seto or Clowe, for as good as they are, as critical to this team winning a cup. Who knows it could be someone else but DW didn’t just magically turn 10 overnight. He won’t let the D stay where it is coming into this season after what happened in the Chi series.

  4. Doug says:

Sorry guys, my dad got on the family computer the other day and posted this nonsense blog. He follows the sharks two and wanted to see if he could pass himself off as me.

Again, I’m very sorry, but getting Burns for Seto is dreaming on his part. Idiocy, really. And as for how the Sharks will fit Michalek, Hamhuis, or Volchenkov’s 5 mil per year contracts under the cap after signing Wallin to that terrible contract is beyond me.

The Sharks are on the decline folks. Doug Wilson put the nail in the coffin with that Wallin signing.

    • Tom says:

Given the fact that Doug is married, doubtful his dad got on the “family computer”… Either I missed the humor or you’re just a little strange…

  5. Tom says:

    A side note,

Now I now the source… Really I do. But if there was ever a time to want Eklund to have a Sharks rumor in his 4% accuracy range it’s now.

He’s reporting a rumor of Seto and Wallin for Kaberle. Again I know the source but DW might be alot more shrewed than we think… Maybe? It’s the only way I’d be okay with that crazy contract. If he just traded in away. And that new NTC doesn’t kick in for a few days so it’s possible although not very probable.

  6. Doug says:

    You missed the humor.

That’s not to say I’m 0% strange, but you missed the humor.

The notion of trading Setoguchi for Burns is stupid, and very much bias, wishful thinking on Doug’s part. The kind of thing a small child would wish for without taking reality into consideration. Based on the stupidity, and childishness of that notion, I inferred that Doug was a child, living with his parents, that his posts sound like they’re coming from a 10 year old, however else you want to put it.

  7. Doug says:

As for Seto and Wallin for Kaberle, I doubt Burke would take Seto by himself for Kaberle, not to mention Seto and the horrible Wallin contract. It doesn’t make any sense to me, and I can’t remember the last instance of signing a UFA and then trading him a week later. It really makes no sense. I’m not saying it won’t happen, and usually the rumors Eklund reports at least have some legs, or have been discussed by GM’s, even if they don’t always happen, but this seems very unlikely. Sharks fans can hope though. The only way this team does anything but get much worse this next season is if the Sharks get a gift, and that would definitely be a gift.

  8. Patrick says:

    a) Doug Santana very rarely posts in the comments section; and
    b) the Doug doing most of the posting in this thread doesn’t have a link to DOH in his name (a la Doug in post #2)

While this poster may or may not actually have the name “Doug,” I think we can all agree that he (or she) has a very odd sense of humor.

  9. Steve says:

Seto and Huskins for Ryan Suter or am I just dreaming?

    • evilducks says:

Does it feel particularly cold in hell these days? If not, I don’t see this happening.

  10. Patrick says:

I’m so tired of reading other boards, where basically every other comment is about how bad Doug Wilson sucks because of that Wallin contract. I count myself firmly in the “we can’t judge” camp. In the coming weeks, as signings and trades shake out and we have a better idea of what the opening day roster will look like, then I’m all for judging.

But right now everything that matters is happening behind closed doors. Until some of the contracts start to surface, we won’t know how/if the Wallin signing hurt the Sharks.

  11. Tom says:

    @Patrick

Agreed somewhat. The sky can always be falling for some. However unless Wallin gets traded there isn’t a pretty enough dress you can put on that pig.

But yes often Sharks fans go a little batty this time of year. Especially the ones that think they are some kind of logic police and rip other people for having stupid opinions. I think everyone needs a time out.

    • Patrick says:

I guess my point, which I didn’t articulate very well, is that even if it’s an overpayment, we don’t know yet if it matters. In other words, I would argue that a fair price for Wallin would be in the 1.5-1.8M range, meaning we overpaid by 0.7-1.0M. Is 700k going to be the difference between signing Volchenkov (or another marquis #2D) and getting outbid by somebody else? If so, then I’m in total agreement. Horrible contract.

But something tells me that’s not the case. We won’t know for at least a few days still.

    • Evilducks says:

says the guy that cussed me out for making a joke.

    • Ian says:

It depends on who ya like and who you think is heading out the door. I know my reaction was something along the lines of “Writing a post that would make Garner Proud”. I have since stepped off the ledge. I think in order for the sharks to do what they need to do someone is getting kicked off the Island, that could be Clowe and that annoys me to an extent. The problem of course is how you present that argument like Tom said it gets troublesome when when people really rip into each other because its not worth being a jerk to each other over stuff that frankly we as fans have no control over.

This is my favorite time of year though because you can endlessly discuss what the sharks may or may not do. Unfortunately people can get a little overheated defending those opinions.

  12. Tom says:

Given the way I see DW working is that the big name players he won’t get too involved with anyways.

But I could imagine DW grabbing an underrated D-man maybe at the 1.5-2.5m range for the 2nd pairing. If that can’t happen because we overpaid Wallin, or even just because we signed him, that contract will suck.

But I see your point and do agree with you. We can’t really judge until camp starts and rosters get solidified.
