post DOH 144 – Miracle Comeback

The Dudes almost can’t believe the Sharks dug (Doug?) themselves out of a 0-4 hole.  But here they are, up 2-1, and the Dudes try and figure out what has gone so right (and wrong) with the series.  Does Niemi’s last two performances warrant a change?  Who are the unsung heroes and goats so far?  All that, and a recap of the other great 1st round series.

I agree with your assessment of Thornton and the poor game he had, but Boyle had 2 HUGE assists in that game giving Marleau and Clowe wide open nets that even I could have scored on. Sure, defensively he had a little bit of a rough outting but I’d argue that he had the same level game as Ian White who had a rough start of things as well before contributing to the comeback.

Dudes – funny you mention that Mark Purdy quote. My wife and I where are the game and they showed that on the jumbotron. The place was all dark and they showed the beginning part on the screen about a loud building being the biggest advantage in hockey (or whatever it was), and then that fades out, and “STAPLES Center is not one of those places. -San Jose Mercury News” faded in. The place went bonkers. It was actually pretty cool.

That was by far the most hostile environment I’ve ever been in as a visiting fan. That includes sitting in the USC student section wearing a Notre Dame shirt, Dodger stadium wearing a Giants shirt, the upper deck at Michigan State wearing a Notre Dame shirt, and the United Center wearing a Sharks jersey.

My wife was terrified. She wanted to leave after the first period. The guy to her right was literally screaming obscenities in her face every time the Kings scored. We switched seats and he settled down a little. The guys behind us kept reaching over and waving their rally rags in our faces. I had a Marleau jersey on so there were 4-5 people in our section who constantly were yelling things like “Marleau is a pussy” or “your jersey smells like a diaphragm.” On the way to the bathroom, one girl kicked me in the shin. Another told me I had man boobs, and then on her way back said something I won’t even repeat. At the urinal, a guy behind me said he was going to go Jarrett Stoll and plan my face into the wall while I peed.

When Seto scored the winner, that was the sweetest silence I have ever heard in my entire life.

      Jeez. Stay classy, L.A.

Oh, forgot one more: leaving our seats somebody threw a cup of beer with a few sips left. It barely grazed my ear on its way to landing on another Kings fan in front of me, who was sitting in his seat still with his head in his hands. He stood up and whirled around, irate, and I said “It was somebody up there. They were aiming for me.” He looked up and apparently spotted the culprit, because he took off up the stairs after them. I don’t know what happened next – we kept our heads down and were trying to just get out of there.

I never really had any animosity toward Kings fans. I thought we both kind of saw the Ducks as the enemy, and each other as relatively harmless. I guess that changes pretty quickly in a playoff series.

That comeback win by your Sharks was some payback for what happened to Brian Stow. Karma is a bitch and I don’t think she’s done. LA’s got at least 6 or 8 more of those coming their way. As Doug said, “it couldn’t have happened to a better fan base.”

  3. Tom says:

With Detroit sweeping the Yotes and the fact they have key injuries, the last thing the Sharks can do is drag out this series with LA and give Detroit extra rest. Sharks need to jump on LA tonight quick and hard and get er’ done!!

    • Nick says:

      Like.

    • Patrick says:

Don’t they wait until all series are over to start the next round? They can’t just start a SJ/Det series once those two teams are ready, because if the Hawks managed to come all the way back it changes the Round 2 matchups.

The Wings will get their rest no matter how long the SJ/LA series goes.

      • Tom says:

Yes this is true. But if the Sharks go 7 and DET is well rested then DET will have an edge. You’re right DET will get their rest, well earned too, but Sharks can’t let the discrepancy get too big.

And of course just make sure you win this one too though 😉

  4. Tom says:

Another question… Per the recent struggles by Antii Niemi in net… Is he getting tired?

I realize it’s early, but man the Sharks rode him down the stretch? Thoughts?

    • Cyoor says:

Well, I think we will know tonight, but yeah, he could probably use some rest a game or two.

      • Ruben says:

Niemi looked good tonight, but still a little slow. His problems with his glove hand are creeping back (I believe the Kings’s first goal was off a rebound that glanced off his glove).

Hopefully the Sharks close in 5 to give him a little rest.

Since it said it’s “Posted with permission” I’m sure you guys are aware but the shoutout from the Sharkspage.com is nice recognition of the strength of your podcast. Thanks dudes.
