post DOH 320 – Hope For the Best

The Sharks only win one at home, but they are still in second place in the division.  With some very winnable games coming, and the possible return of Logan Couture, the Sharks might see an uptick soon.

I don’t know when it happened, but the podcast has degraded to 40 mins of almost baseless rambling. Not once did anyone say corsi or shooting % and instead lowered yourselves to common platitudes and stereotypes of “the it factor” and “something”. It was so bad that I had to turn it off after 20 mins. I’ll now take my fandom to Fear the Fin where they still do thoughtful analysis and check up on you dudes later in the season to see if the podcast has turned it around.

Thanks for reminding me why I stopped going to FTF.

I like the fun times here on the podcast, but let’s not pretend the analysis is on the same level right now with FTF. Tony has a point, even if you disagree with Corsi and ESSV% or whatever, it sure sounds like Mike has lost faith in it and has moved over to Doug’s side with some topics, such as the “rotten core” narrative and needing to win certain games to prove the team is a contender.

Putting aside which is the correct approach, previously having Mike take the “analytic” approach and Doug take the “secret sauce” approach made for a more compelling podcast. With both of them on the secret sauce side, it sounds more like Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless. Fun, sure, but different than before and different than why some people started with them back when they were on hockeyanalysis.com.

Just my thoughts. Still enjoying it myself but in a different way.

        • Mike says:

I certainly haven’t lost faith in advanced stats- I just don’t see a good story in them w.r.t the Sharks. I don’t put any real stock in “chemistry” or “heart” or whatever. This team just isn’t playing very well, and talking about CorsiRel seems like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

I’ll take another look an see if I can find something good to talk about on the next show.

        • Tom says:

I never said the “analysis” was the same. I don’t listen to DOH for a advanced stats analysis. I’m talking about the arrogant holier-than-thou attitude exhibited by many, if not most FTF’ers and advanced stats fans in general.

Tony’s petulant remarks are prime example.

    • Mike says:

Hey, it was only 35 minutes of baseless rambling. We’ll shoot for 40 next week.

    • AnonymousSharksfan says:

Meh. FTF hasn’t been the same since Matt and Plank left. God knows I can’t wait for that insightful Emily G. article. If it wasn’t for FTF I wouldn’t know that Mr. Gutless best resembles a mako shark because shark players as actual sharks is the type of crap I love to read. Maybe the guys at FTF can go back to talking about their thoughtful analysis on why ice girls are bad for hockey. Shame on you dudes! I’ll take my fandom to FTF and check on you dudes later in the season because I’m mad I didn’t get my 2XL dudes on hockey t-shirt.

      • Tom says:

Actually now that we’re bringing up old wounds… I never got my prize pack from way way back after winning a trivia question from the old radio show with Mike and Chatham!!!

        REVOLT!!!

        jk. 😉

Can’t please everybody. In my case, I look forward to Dudes on Hockey every week.

  3. Rosevelt says:

Wondering if on the next episode the Dudes can give their assessment of DeBoer as coach so far. I was so excited watching the first few games and seeing a team with a clear identity. But that seems like a long time ago. Now the team looks disorganized. Most games, I can’t tell what kind of game they are trying to play. Also, I know that Burns is a dynamic player, but on some level isn’t it a bad idea to have the player with the worst +/- on the team playing the most minutes?

    • James says:

It’s not on the coach. DeBoer’s only mistake this year was saying “The Sharks are back” after just a few games. Otherwise, he’s done all he can, even going so far as to suggest Zubrus because the forward depth is so weak. No, this is all on DW and his organization’s inability to develop depth players through the draft, AHL, and finally arriving in the NHL when they are ready.

Prediction: TMac’s Oilers make the playoffs and the Sharks do not. I’d guess Wilson has to get fired then, but when it comes to the Sharks, who knows.

  4. Minority Vite says:

Haven’t watched a Sharks game since March. Decided to check in on the season tonight … Wilson still the GM? Check. Burns still at D? Check. (-14, tied for second-worst in the NHL, ouch!) Thornton still on the roster? Check. Ok, I can keep ignoring the team until the post-Wilson era begins. (sigh)
