post DOH 340 – Why Not Us?

The Sharks have managed to win two of the last three games, which bring the Stanley Cup Final back to the Tank for Game 6.  Although the Sharks have been pretty well dominated in every game in the series, Martin Jones has been a revelation, and the Sharks are still in it.  With only two games left in the season, anything can happen.

Dudes, Great podcast, great title. I have been a Sharks fan since the cow palace days. Here’s my only formula for the Sharks: they lose when no one expects them to win, but they tend to win when all expect them to lose. Such as the years when the teams was great and then they lost in the playoffs. Vs this year, when people thought nothing of the team and of course they go to the final, which is the Sharkiest thing they could do. That was how I felt tonight. No one expected them to win and they – well, really just Jones – pulled it out.

Should be “they lose when we expect them to win, but they tend to win when we all expect them to lose.”

    DUDES!

That was one of the most incredible first periods I have seen in a long time.
Great steal by Jones. I would have titled the episode “Pitty Party”. Thousands paid thousands to attend the party of the decade in Pittsburgh. But the Sharks spoiled the fun…what a blow.
Doubt seeps into The Pens pysche. What a ride! What fun! GO SHARKS

Completely agree with Mike’s comments in this episode. One exception is, the Sharks deserved to win Game 3. Yes they were outshot, but they played well. Rest of the series, the Sharks have been dominated. Series has not been enjoyable to watch. Sure feels like this will be over Sunday. The only way this turns around is if the top line gets going and something changes on D, such as a roster change or suddenly Polak starts playing well.

I will say this, if Jones steals game 6 again I think he’ll totally be in the Penguins heads.

Think Jonas Hiller 2009. We skated circles around that team and outshout them by huge margins, often 2-1… yet goaltending is the great X-factor in the NHL playoffs.

Could Martin Jones be that guy for the San Jose Sharks franchise?? Oh Please Lord help us.

  5. Henry says:

Surprised how optimistic Doug is. The Sharks were so lucky to get out of game 5. They Pens hit posts, completely outplayed the Sharks. For the the series I’d say SJ has outplayed P for only 2-3 periods. The Sharks are really missing Hertl. Like someone said, seems odd the podcast isn’t more regular, especially in the final.

  6. Emily Hall says:

Haven’t listened to the podcast for awhile, meant to do it after I ran into you both at gm 6 v. STL. Thx for mentioning me Doug and also thanks for staying optimistic. So much easier to listen to the podcast when one of you is hopeful.
I agree w/ Doug, anything can happen now that the Sharks beat PIT in gm 5. Mike, you still sound like you’re on the ledge about this round, but I will attempt to convince you away from it.
The Sharks have been getting better in small increments each game. The fact that we scored first (despite PIT equalizing the score shortly afterwards) that was huge. I also saw on the stat sheet from gm 5 that PIT only blocked 10 shots (Bonino alone has blocked 19 in this series) to SJS 17. Now if our top line would just shoot more!
*IF* the Sharks can force a gm 7, PIT has a history of choking in gm 7’s after they lead a series 3 – 1 when they have to play gm 7 at home. They did it in 2011 v. TBL in the ECQF & again in 2014 v. NYR in the ECSF.
Will the weight of expectation of the Penguins winning the cup at home (1st title won in Pittsburgh since 1960 w/ the Pirates won) be overwhelming?
Who knows? But w/ all the inexperienced young guys on the roster & Murray looking like an average goalie & not like the rookie phenom the media made him out to be, I like the Sharks chances.
btw, if the Sharks pull it off, they will be the only team EVER to win the Stanley Cup after being down 3-1 in a series. History Will Be Made.
Have a great time at game 6. Yell extra loud.
    GO SHARKS! #FinishPitt

Bummed the Sharks lost, but this was the greatest season in Sharks history. So much to celebrate. It feels less painful losing to a team that was clearly superior. It’s much worse when the Sharks lose to a team they should beat. In the playoffs, your team is only as good as its weakest link. And in the Final, there were several weak links, including some very unexpected ones: the 4th line, the 3rd pairing, and yes, Pavs.

Pretty soon the inevitable off-season questions will start up. I think we all know Marleau will be gone after next season, so do you trade him this offseason? At next year’s deadline? And do you re-up Jumbo? If so, when?

Bottom line is, kudos to DW, PDB, and the entire team. I think if they had met the Pens in the first round, SJ could have taken them down. But after thousands of miles of travel, the wear and tear of 3 rounds, and the lack of a 4th line that could play solid minutes, the team didn’t have enough to beat the young, speedy, aggressive, Pens.

And now we have an East Coast rival.

Man its nice to listen to this podcast now that the series is over…..if the pens weren’t there imagine how good a tampa san jose series would of been my goodness even. But oh well the cup is in Pittsburgh, and she is pretty. Sorry had to throw that in. Go pens. Congrats to the Sharks for being a worthy opponent, and on having a great season. Ps. Hopefully murray will continue to improve and sure up that left side.

Not even a Sharks fan but I feel the need to chime in….

Your team just won the Cup and you feel the need to seek out a small time Sharks blog/podcast to gloat? It must truly suck being you.

You can spare everyone the “I come in peace” bullshit. That’s clearly not the case and even if it were, it’s bad form to do this roughly 24 hours after the series was over.

      Get a life.

Totally bummed the Sharks didn’t win game 6. I was certain that Pavs would finally show up but he proved me wrong. Not sure if he was playing with an injury, or if he simply lost his confidence. In his post game interviews throughout the finals he didn’t have the same swagger and it showed in his play.

Still proud of this team. At the beginning of this season, if Sharks fans were given a choice between ending the season with a high draft pick or going all the way to the Stanley Cup Final…but ending up as the losing team, I think most fans would pick the latter.
