It’s been ten years on the dot since the Dudes started podcasting, back when the internet was scrawled on stone tablets.  In this special episode, Mike and Doug talk more about the biggest offseason story – the John Tavares destination, and touch briefly on the draft and other topics.

Happy Anniversary Dudes! I’ve been listening since Fall 2008. It’s pathetic how obsessed I am with this podcast. Your insights, jokes, and chemistry are unsurpassed. You’ve cheered me up when I’m down and always get me more excited to watch Sharks hockey. I think the exorcism is my favorite episode. Keep ’em coming for another 10 years!

Only Tavares knows what he will do, but if by some miracle he signs with the Sharks, I imagine we’re going to hear that Kane’s contributions to recruiting him were key. Kane’s twitter feed suggests he was in LA to help pitch Tavares. And he’s got an article in the Players’ Tribune today. Kane points out he was frustrated being on losing Jets and Sabres teams, but felt he should be part of the fix. Then the trade to the Sharks came and he experienced winning. In other words: Tavares, we know you feel obligated to turn around the isles, but you’re in your prime and you should be on a winning team and enjoying playing at a high level. That is an argument for joining any competitive team now.

  7. Matty says:

It makes sense that the Isles and Leafs are all in for Tavares – they have plenty of cap space now and in the future. But I don’t quite understand how the Sharks make the cap space work for 2 years out from now if they sign Tavares. Right now, they have to resign Hertl, Tierney, Fehr and Jumbo. Next season, they need to ink Pavelski, Couture, Donskoi, Meier, Ryan and Lebanc. We’re hearing Couture’s deal is already done and will be announced 7/1 or soon thereafter. I guess is they sign Tavares, they will be hoping someone like Pavs takes a pay cut, and then the Sharks will part ways with some of the young guys before the 2020 season. I’d be *very* interested to hear what package the Sharks offered Tavares. If it’s in the McDavid range ($12.5 mil) I don’t think any single player in the NHL is worth that much.

    • James says:

Every team has to make those kinds of decisions. Yes, the Leafs have a lot of cap space now, but could they lock up Tavares, Matthews, and Marner next year for long-term plus put a decent team out on the ice in ’19-20? This is what makes what Wilson has done this year so impressive. He’s cleared the space for a Tavares or JVR without sacrificing the core. If he lands them, great, those hard roster decision will be made next year. If we don’t sign a big name UFA, we’ve got the space to re-up all those guys you listed.

But keep in mind, the Sharks need a #1 center. Pavs could probably do it 1-2 seasons, or Couture take over, but in that case, who’s the second line center? Al-star #1 centers just don’t come along. So he’s worth it, especially considering we wouldn’t need to sign him for an 8th year.

I still think he stays with the Islanders. Lou, Trotz, the Calder for Barzal, 2 great first round picks, just too many things breaking the Islanders way.

But my hope is he decides that waiting 3 seasons for a new Arena is too long and Toronto is too much spotlight.

Dudes – Many congratulations on the 10 years!!!
Won’t pretend I was there for episode #1, but I was on board within a couple of months (certainly when the podcast number led to a discussion of the Sharks who wore that Jersey number – which Shark has worn number 390??)
DoH was one of the first Podcasts & got into & still the most entertaining (by some margin). I couldn’t even begin to list the other podcasts I’ve listened to since but have fallen by the wayside: 10 years and 390 episodes is an incredible achievement.
It’s been a great ride to be along for – the ups and downs just shown by the number of moments which you touched on. I think my personal favourite was after the night I woke myself up to watch game 7 v’s the Red Wings on a dodgy feed… I was struggling to get up bleary eyed & driving into work the next day but it was great listening to snap-recording and the elation in your voices from your post-match excitement.
I’ve just paid up front for my subscription for another decade, so looking forward to getting my value for money for another great 10 years!!!

  9. Teddy says:

Full disclosure: I am salty! ugely disappointing day for the Sharks. 1) Marleau helps talk JT out of SJ and into Toronto 2) Kane’s contract looks like a massive overpayment compared to JvR 3) We didn’t even appear in on JvR, who would have been a great fit 4) We didn’t even get our pln B, O’Reilly. The asking price was steep but I think we desperately need a top-2 center before the start of the season, so who exactly will that be? 5) Why did we let Fehr go? He was great for us. And oh year, we need centers! … So are we just going to pay Thorton another $8 mil because we flunked the offseason, just like last year? Here’s hoping DW has something up his sleeve, but we can’t go through a season and expect to add a center at the deadline. Ah! Damn you Toronto! I guess we need to learn: we never, ever, ever get big name UFA’s. Gretzsky, Stamkos, Niedermeyer, Tavares, etc.

  10. James says:

Quite an emotional weekend! I wanted to wait at least a day until posting. My two cents is, there are some parties that came out of the weekend looking great. Others not so much.

    Lookin’ Good

The Leafs. They offered far less salary than the Isles or Sharks and still get Tavares. They use the “coming home” card (and a little Patty Marleau) to sign the biggest UFA in recent NHL history, but keep the cap space to redo their D.

The Flyers. Never wading in to the Tavares sweepstakes, they quietly targeted JvR and sign the 30+ goal scorer for a steal 5 years $35 mil total. Wow. (Is there something about this kid in the locker room we don’t know about?)

    Not Good

Tavares. He tells the Isles not to trade him as a rental player at the deadline because he’s returning, then bolts, making the Isles lose their greatest asset for nothing. It sure looks like he was at least thinking of (if not leaning towards) leaving and didn’t want to risk injury as a rental player. Just imagine what he would have fetched in such a trade, especially considering what Tatar got. I’m thinking it cost the Isles 2 firsts, a blue chip prospect, and a young goalie.

Garth Snow. Hidsight is 20/20, but he should have made Tavares a ridiculous offer at the deadline, i.e. the alleged “monster deal” Lou put on the table over the weekend, and told Tavares: sign or I’ll trade you at the deadline. Nothing personal, just business. You can’t let this guy walk and get nothing. Everyone on the island will be calling for his dismissal.

Doug Wilson. I don’t blame Wilson for going after Tavares. But you have to have a plan B. Today, the Sharks should have JvR, Fehr, and DeMelo on their roster. They have none and now they need 2 centers. Then, he lets plan C, O’Reilly, go. Even Kurz is wondering WTF. Plus, the Kane deal compared to the JvR deal looks like a massive overpay. Also, Doug, please stop these pathetic public statements. They sound like a high school kid publicly thanking a girl for at least considering to date you. “I’m so grateful to have been able to speak with you. Yes, you rejected me, but I’m honored you spoke to me.”

Rob Blake. Seriously, what is the plan here – to just keep rolling out the same guys and occasionally add other veterans past their plan, like Phaneuf?
