Both Patrick Marleau and Barclay Goodrow are on the move, and the Sharks did acquire some useful picks at the deadline. However, the team has lost four in a row, and has gotten worse.

Hot off the deadline, a new podcast! Nice Dudes! Marleau is a good trade because he’s an iron man, had a slightly shortened season, and can come back next year ready to play. Sad to see Goodrow go, a quality depth player on a great contract next year. But as Doug predicted Wilson was hell-bent to get into the 1st round and a 1st for Goodrow is a great deal. Also – Chris Tierney is about to be a UFA. Could the Sharks bring him back? I hope so. Similar numbers and role to Goodrow. On Jumbo, my guess is the Bruins and others offered something like a 5th for him. And Wilson thought, that price is not worth the risk of injury, or the benefit of a long off-season for Jumbo. The Sharks will clearly need him another year. So all in all, a good day. I think we know, this also means Lebanc will be on the team next year. So we pretty much know the top-6. As to the bottom-6 and the goalie, it’s anybody’s guess.

Jumbo said flat out he was expecting to get traded and was very open to going to a contender. Said he “wasn’t sure why it didn’t happen”.

I think DW couldn’t get the return that made any sense other than just a very late pick. Who knows really?

Jumbo also said he thinks he has “years more” he can play. So I’m thinking he’ll keep playing as long as DW lets him.

So what will the Sharks do next year – bring back Patty and Jumbo? This team is out of ideas. And roster players.

    • Brenden says:

Yes it’s sad now – and will be worse when the Sens pick is in the top 5, maybe top 3 (gulp) – but there are 2 good pieces of news for the Sharks. One is the 1st they got for Goodrow + the 3rd, which is great. Two is the recent elite play of Ryan Merkley. 2nd in the OHL in Dman scoring. He can be traded for a roster player if the Sharks are feeling really desperate. Or, they can bring him up to the ‘Cuda next year before making the big club a year later. He’s only 19.

  4. Taylor says:

I politely disagree with what Mike and Doug have been asserting all year. Letting Pavelski go ripped the heart out of this team.

  5. Heather says:

I have less trust in DW than the Dudes. I would argue he made the wrong call on Pavs, PDB, and Jumbo to a contender. I could see Jumbo signing elsehwere this offseason. I sense we’ll be a borderline playoff time for years. Nevertheless, I am rooting for Pattyy and Paves to hoist the cup. Go Pens/Stars!!!

    • Taylor says:

I read the Thornton / Marleau deadline decisions differently. I’d put Marleau’s odds of returning to the Sharks next year at 25% because Wilson doesn’t really need a 12-goal scoring winger over 40 years old, whereas Thornton is 99% because he’s still a solid two-way center option on the 3rd or 4th line. Wilson doesn’t want any extra tread on Thornton’s tires as he is injury prone. Though Thornton may be a little peeved, he’ll be in teal next fall. Patty, I’m doubtful about.

  6. Heather says:

Also, is it just me or do the Sharks not miss Karlsson 5-on-5 at all.

  7. Heather says:

Kurz Twitter feed says Marleau will return next year. Have to agree with James that looks like Wilson is out of ideas.

  8. Tom says:

If Wilson brings Marleau back next year… FML.

I just don’t even know what to say any more. I truly think this franchise is stuck on Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton. I love em’ but we’re never going to move on until they’re retired I think.

Right now this feels like a buddy who just keeps breaking up with a girlfriend only to keep getting back together. Only when they’re together their miserable and fight constantly and make everyone else miserable. Break up, get back together, wash rinse repeat. Ugh.
