The goalies are atrocious. They rank 29 (Dubnyk) and 62 (Jones) in terms of save% in the league. If you think, hey, they face a lot of tough shots because the team is crap… well, they rank 26 (Dubnyk) and 56 (Jones) in QS%. You can’t win with this.

When you let in goals like you’re a goalie in the 80’s you can’t blame the defense or Karlsson or whoever. I’d like Karlsson to play better, but constantly ripping him when JONES is right there is kind of annoying. It’s like watching a swimmer with a boat anchor tied to him and criticizing his form.

    • Perniciousducks says:

But really, I’m looking at this like the start of a massive rebuild. 3-5 years of building up a pipeline of prospects and just being awful… so really, Jones is the best asset we can have for that. No matter what we add in front, we’ll constantly be a bottom feeder team and getting relatively good picks.

      • Mike says:

I like this take- Jones as an insurance policy to always suck.

Honestly though I think we might have gotten some value out of Jones in the first year or two of his contract, but we will have EK65 for a lot longer at twice the price.
        Also:
        1. EK65 is an offensive d-man, so his paltry stats cannot be tied to Jones.
        2. I’m more interested in Corsi and Fenwick based stats, which are not affected by save percentage. Karlsson is the worst defenseman on the Sharks by this metric.

        • Perniciousducks says:

Oh, I agree, he’s not been good this year, but the Sharks being bad are not only or even primarily on him (as the Wild game shows). He needs to be better, but I don’t think him being better solves the major issues. I think the only player that actually is playing well is Couture, otherwise you’re making more than you’re worth if you’re a Shark, it’s just to varying degrees, and Jones is the worst of them all. EK’s contract is bigger, but Jones plays like a beer league goalie for a full 60 minutes per game. A league min contract would be too much for what he’s putting on the ice.

I think if the opposing team paid Jones 5 mil per season that would be a good investment for any team playing the Sharks, he’s very good for their team.

          • James says:

Nothing could improve the team quicker than getting some NHL caliber goaltending.

My biggest criticism of the team is what I’m not hearing. No plan, no goals set, no communication about what the expectations are.

On the positive side, Jumbo a great fit with the Leafs. Good for him.

Can’t watch the game live. Will your twitch stream available for watch later? Cool idea.

Check out the February 26 31 Thoughts podcast. Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek discuss the Sharks season, and there’s an interview with Mario Ferraro.
